I know you’re kidding, but just for the sake of context, they all hated Transformers 2. One of the top 5 guys is probably the biggest Transformers fan I know in real life besides myself, and also liked the first TF movie.
I slot “excessive gore” right next to “depraved violence” and pulled the wrong one out. They’re easy to mix up though.
Multiple people have told me if you can’t take gore, don’t even bother. I didn’t get the impression that it was “depraved” or some kind of Hostel-style torture porn, but just that no punches are pulled when it comes to the effects of human-on-alien violence.
Variety has their review up and is somewhat spoilerish. I’ll just say that the plot revealed sounds pretty predictable. That said, the reviewer also noted the gore and said it was pretty significant, comparing it to some of Peter Jackson’s pre-LOTR splatter flicks.
The review is generally positive and it sounds like the film is technically top-notch despite the budget and that Blokamp does a pretty good job directing.
sigh Movie is only released here at the end of September :(

Saw one of these on the freeway yesterday…I liked it.
Saw it tonight. Believe the fucking hype. Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. The only real downside is that after watching this it’s pretty clear to me that Neill Blomkamp would have made one hell of a Halo movie.
Special extra-forceful recommendation to Battletech fans. Holy shit, I say to you.

Oh, and the reports of brutality are…well, non-existent, because no one who has actually seen it said that, but it’s not torture porn. It’s just that disintegration beams are messy.
This breaks my heart.

There are multiple shots in the movie that are clearly giant “hey, look what you could have had in your Halo movie” middle fingers. There’s one particular scene that makes it hurt more than the others, but I’ll wait for others to see it and point it out.
