Far Cry 5 - Hope springs eternal

Ah! Yeah, probably, I could not figure that out. Looks like AC:Origins is using the same engine as Wildlands. So probably different technology for FarCry 5 than those two other titles.

Polygon gives a 6.5, but complaints are mostly about the story, not the gameplay.

From Mr. Kuchera (Senior Editor, Opinion) in the comments:

If your politics lean right and you want a game that will definitely not offend you, Far Cry 5 is the perfect safe space. I hope you enjoy it!

I’ve seen a few reviews that can’t seem to separate entertainment from politics, and score the game low based on the main villain and/or story (E: I mean in regards to stuff like gun violence). Seems like that’s not being a very objective reviewer, but to each his own I suppose. I let videos and if they excite me or bore me be my guide mostly in cases like this, and watching FC5 videos makes me think this is something I’ll have a good time with, so I pre-ordered it.

I thought the Eurogamer review did a pretty good job of setting the scene in its first paragraph:

You can kick off a spectacular set piece pretty much anywhere in Far Cry 5. All you need do is stand in the road. Give it 60 seconds, and - yes, there it is, a van full of hostages, cruising around unescorted, the lowest of low-hanging fruit. You pour hot lead into the windshield until the driver flops out of his seat like a spent shell casing, then follow the vehicle off-road and help its dazed occupants to safety. One grateful civilian waves you over, a side quest icon materialising over his head. “Wh-” he says, and is promptly swept off his feet by a speeding pick-up truck.

That sounds like an enjoyable open-world game. Hope so, because I pre-ordered, too.

Waypoint doesn’t include scores in their reviews, but they do include an even more important metric.

That works for me since Far Crys have pretty much had universally horrible stories but excellent gameplay. Kuchera’s review actually makes me glad I pre-ordered; especially this part:

What’s left if you have the stomach to ignore the story? A very enjoyable game with an immense number of things to do, a beautifully recreated portion of the United States, and a collection of missions with wildly varying tones and structure. It’s a finely tuned open-world game stapled onto a story that’s insultingly bad.

Sounds great.

The Guardian’s Keza Macdonald has a similar review. (Used to read her reviews on Eurogamer for a long time, and then Kotaku, I think).

This seems to be a common theme to the reviews. As a satire of modern America: Poor. As an open world sandbox full of fun activities: Well done.

If I’m honest, I never thought that it would nail that particular aspect. GTA never has, it’s basically about what people who don’t live in the US learned from movies and sensationistic reporting.

One thing the crabby Polygon reviewer said that I do agree with:

The game does at least reward your fishing efforts. I wonder how much more I’d enjoy Far Cry 5 with a combat-free tourism mode akin to the recent add-on for its sibling series, Assassin’s Creed.

Any game as beautiful as this should have a dedicated hunting/fishing mode. Ditto for Kingdom Come.

Unlocked on UPlay 8.5 hours ago here in Au, which was around 10pm last night local time.

The non-stop spawning enemies is really off putting. It’s why I stopped playing primal a few hours in. Why you give us no time to breathe, ubi??!?

Being around roads spawns enemies every few minutes. Get off the roads. You can get a lot more peace and quiet by traveling cross-country. Hike in the woods!

I’m watching the “Inside Eden’s Gate” movie on Amazon. It’s quite cheesy but amusing.

You mean like this:

I couldn’t stop laughing about the tractor and the bear.

That is the best endorsement of the game I’ve seen.

Poor Ben Kuchera. He was really hoping the game would stick it to all those deplorables he hates.

I have to admit I’m surprised they didn’t. I guess the bean counters always win in the end.

2 hours into this game and so far I LOVE it. It looks absolutely stunning, runs smoothly, and I found this crossbow that I´ll never let go of. Probably. Also the gun for hire is bliss.
Really looking forward to putting in some hours with this, and trying out the multiplayer mode =)

Wait, crossbow? Or do you mean a regular bow? If there’s a crossbow in there to let me go all Norman Reedus on the cultists, I know what I’m going to be obsessed with finding tonight!

@tomchick is good at this game! Landed like a pro! ;)
