Fox News thread of fine journalism

Also the goddamn shitfucks crawling all over /b/ and /r/The_Donald are proof that there’s a great big swath of racist, sexist, authoritarian-humping dickweeds in the Millennial generation, too. Whether they’re in it for the lulz or the chance to see a bunch of brown people get deported, they’re part of the problem.

I wouldn’t count those people out forever. I was a shithead, republican leaning, conservative kinda guy when I was younger and didn’t know any better. People change over time. Also, I thought it was common knowledge that a not insignificant part of /r/The_Donald was either bots or foreign fanbase, aka Russian.

Despite some of my rhetoric here, I will allow it is at least theoretically possible someone can hold one or two conservative views without being an absolute monster. Maybe. I go back and forth on it.

But I think there’s a bit of a difference between “leaning conservative” and “semi-seriously meming about shooting up about libcuck pedopizza incest orgies.” Those dudes (and let’s be honest, of those that aren’t bots or Russians, they’re almost all lonely basement dwelling neckbeards) have just taken a swandive into hate-fueled crazytown that’s pretty different from, say, the jocky Fellowship of Christian Athlete hicks that thumped Bibles and objectified women back in high school.

Not to imply you fell under that categorization. But they’re a chunk I’d call “leaned Conservative when younger without knowing any better” who aren’t as immediately offensive as the 4ch crowd.

So was I and these people aren’t that.

Yup. Speaking as another person that used to be a Republican, these people are nothing like the way I used to be. I was hawkish on national defense, and bought into the “small government” mantra, but at no point did I ever say or write the things people do now. And I certainly never disregarded The New York Times or national TV news as “fake” just because I didn’t like what it was reporting.

The current GOP is insane.

No, Spanish Bay is a course built about 20-25 years ago on the north end of the 18 mile drive. It is a links course that does enter the woods a touch. It also has a lodge.

The courses at Ft. Ord were rebuilt several years ago and are supposed to be wonderful. I played Bayonet before the remodel and it is probably one of the toughest courses I have ever played. They are supposed to be well worth the cost.

I had friends who would stay at the lodge and still be unable to get tee times. But they still stayed at the lodge. I was lucky and had access to a house in Pacific Grove back then. Lost that luxury about 10 years ago sadly when the owner gave the house to his son. :(

I know several guys who I am sure vote republican for various reasons. Some religious (abortion is huge) and some for reasons like “the growing welfare state” and the massive influx of illegals. When your neighborhoods and cities are no longer safe and the bogey (boogie?) man in your mind are the illegals and violent thugs then you vote republican.

The thing is many of these same people are good, hard working people who have become (for the most part) much more socially liberal over the years. But while most liberal social causes don’t cost them money or “kill babies” they see the welfare state and illegals as costing them money. It is economics as much as racism in many cases.

Also, never under state the hatred that exists out there for the Clinton family. I have no idea why it is as strong as it is but it is there.

Nah, they aren’t able to fully indoctrinate their kids.

Bogeyman (or Boogeyman): mythical creature who inspires fear

Really? No idea at all? Nothing to do with, say, decades of systemic demonization by right-wing media and politicians?

Yes, but the hate runs strong against the Clinton’s. It was irrational when Bill was in office. The whole Whitewater and sex scandal stuff began in the 90’s.

:)

All I could think of was the golf reference (bogey) and the porn reference (boogie).

Living here in a red state, the above exactly describes the vast majority of Republicans I am friends with and/or come into contact with daily.

Private Catholic schools are big here, so a lot of folks I know who run in that crowd automatically vote Republican because they are pro-life. In the most recent election, they were doubly determined to vote Republican, even if they did not like Trump, because of the SCOTUS situation and the fear that Hillary would turn the tables and make abortion the new birth control of choice in America. It doesn’t matter how many times I point out to them that the best way to stop abortion is to stop unwanted pregnancies which in turn means assisting at-risk individuals with education, healthcare and family planning, all the things Planned Parenthood and similar organizations are already doing, it’s still the Conservative Media talking point of “BUT THE BABIES ARE BEING MURDERED!!!”.

Also big where I live is farming and manufacturing, industries which have been hit hard by globalization. But rather than blame improvements in automation and corporate greed in moving production offshore, it’s far easier to blame government regulation and illegal immigration for the loss of high paying, low skill union factory jobs and the consolidation of family farms into conglomerates. When you try to mention things like trade skills and job retraining in the growing energy and infrastructure segments, you’re told that people are too old to retrain, and that earning a good living farming or working on the shop floor is as American as apple pie and should be protected at all costs. If only those climate change morons hadn’t convinced the government to regulate emissions and waste products, all those factories would still be open.

You can’t argue logic with these people, they don’t want to hear it. They’ve spent the past 8 years absorbing Conservative Media like sponges and railing against Obama and Liberals, while at the same time many of them are actually better off now than they were in 2008 when Obama was elected. I ask my Conservative suburban friends all the time about how they’ve done for themselves over the past 8 years. The answer is always “Everything I have I’ve worked hard for and earned, and Liberals want to take it away and give it to poor people and immigrants”. Nevermind the fact that if that were actually true, it would have already happened under Obama’s administration.

There is literally no reasoning with these folks anymore. They’re genuinely nice people for the most part, generally well educated and intelligent, and many of them are very successful in life, but they’ve been brainwashed, completely indoctrinated into an ideology that makes little common sense and has them voting directly against their own best interests in the name of “Saving the babies!” or “Saving American workers!” or “Saving the American way of life!”. The only counter for this is to re-educate them on what’s real, what is in their best interest, and it’s too late for that because Conservative Media has effectively undermined that already with the whole “Fake News” thing.

My area is primarily ag, although the business of being a large city has led to other opportunities. But the ag interests here, in large part because they seek a water ally, donate heavily to the GOP (they also donate heavily to the Dems, strange group), they hosted Trump and raised big money for him. And now they are wondering where the water is and where their farm workers are. But in 2020 they will do the exact same thing again.

That’s really the thing there. I don’t understand it but among all my conservative friends it’s a recurring theme.

I was chatting sociably last night with a guy I play Dungeons and Dragons with. Good guy, also a hardcore republican and a definite Trump voter. He brought up, out of the blue, how much of a clown Trump was and how apparently America now just elects the person who makes the most outrageous statements. Curious at this seeming admission on his part, I asked if he wished he could have voted differently back in November. He said no, because no good person could vote for “Killary.”

I actually found this sort of heartening, because it means that maybe America hasn’t gone completely nuts, it just thinks Hillary stole its boyfriend back in sophmore year. It means Trump may be very vulnerable in 2020.

It’s hugely heartening, as it means folks have not completely lost touch with reality.

I don’t know. In the story, the person also called Clinton “Killary” so I wouldn’t be so quick to credit them with a reality-based worldview.

Well, she and Bill have killed hundreds in pursuit of power and money. :)

But weirdly, I do believe there are some on the right who actually believe that. Of course, they are the real nuts on the right. The scary ones.

Yes indeed, and is a firm believer in the whole “Clintons are evil bastards who have a lot of people killed” narrative.

But “reality-based worldview” isn’t really my concern, because I know plenty of liberals who struggle with that as well. As long as there’s enough clarity to realize that Trump is a autocratic clown then I’m less worried. I’m not concerned about America turning conservative or giving Republicans a big majority. That wouldn’t be what I’d like for America but America would persevere even if it did happen. I’m worried about America going so nutty it turns overtly fascist and the institutional pillars of our system of government are threatened.

Happily I’m less worried about that now.

I know many who do. And they’re not the loony/conspiracy type, either. This is strictly a Hillary thing. Decades of propaganda will do that, I suppose.
