I was actually pleasantly surprised about about how little that affected my trip this year. I decided to go late so could only get a hotel room outside the loop on the NE side of town. It really wasn’t a big deal. I got cheap reserved parking (through ParkWhiz) just across the street from the Lucas Oil Stadium.
That said, it’d certainly be more convenient to be in the convention hotels, especially if drinking is on your agenda.
