Greyhound - Tom Hanks vs. U-Boats

I’m glad Hank’s made Greyhound, it is probably going to be like Midway. If I get a chance to watch it for free. However you and Lee reminded me that DasBoot is a TV series and I’m watching with my free Hulu Trial. So far faithful to the amazing movie. I would have forgotten about it if not for Greyhound

I think I’ll watch it…and be happy that my Uncle Victor didn’t live to see this made. He was the communications officer on an escort destroyer that did in real life what it sounds like is depicted in the film – essentially protect translantic troop transports and ships carrying supplies – going from the east coast to Northern Africa.

And to hear him tell it a few years ago, the main way they killed enemy subs was to spot them out and keep them at perimeter while they got aircraft from the CVL that was also assigned to the task force to take them out.

I’ll second the Das Boot TV series(just seen season 1). It’s very much in the vein of the 1982 movie and very well done. Just FYI the show evenly splits time with characters on the land.

The trailer alone shows how unrealistic the combat in the movie is. Its typical ‘keep the ADD crowd excited’ stuff that is more Micheal Bay than anything based on what would have actually occurred.

Recently we’ve been watching Tom Hanks movies such as Cast Away, Sully and Captain Phillips, all of which are thoroughly entertaining and emotional, so to hear these comments about Greyhound is a bit disheartening. We know Hanks is better than that. Someone up thread joked that they thought this would be a movie about a bus driver. Sounds like that would have been a better movie! I can just picture Hanks in that kind of role, too.

I binge watched 6 out of 8 episodes of Das Boot. It is probably 2/3 spy thriller (i.e. French Resistance) and 1/3 submarine movie but both parts are done well.

Season 2 of Das Boot was released in the Spring but I can’t figure out how us Americans can legally watch it.

Same, I can’t find any way to see s2 of Das Boot. My GoogleFu is weak, and I’m not happy about it! :]

Generally liked Greyhound–got some great moments, though the subject matter is extremely compressed, there’s no character building or even plot outside of pure survival. It’s so short I feel like they probably left quite a bit out. There could have been some more set up or downtime, and what particular seqeuence they kind of blew through and obfuscated. Some elements they could have drawn out more but didn’t. I appreciated how it puts you almost straight into the action very quickly, but it kind of serves as a detriment to the rest of the film at times.

In the end the situation and results a tad bit unrealistic, historical inaccuracies aside. Still, you get a great feel for what’s going on and how tactically the ships operated. And that’s worth the watch in of itself.

It’s also interesting how certain voiceovers featured in the trailer don’t even show up in the film. The message from the PBY is over signal lamp, not spoken (oh and the PBY scenes all seem the most fake CGI wise), and when the Germans talking over the TBS is completely, utterly different. I kind of prefer the trailer’s version to be honest.

Oh and by the way, all you need to do is sign up for Apple TV for a free one week trial and watch on your browser. You don’t need a box. You won’t get it in 4k, but if that doesn’t matter to you, it’s a way to go.

I really dig the soundtrack too.

Haven’t seen it, and probably won’t for a while, but for movies like this–historical situations framing personal stories–the realism aspect is much less important than the character development, acting, and script. I can enjoy a pure action film with bogus history if it’s exciting and cool, and I can enjoy a well-acted, well-written character film with questionable historical basis (think Casablanca for the quintessential example). This one seems to fall between the cracks of either framing–from the comments and reviews, it seems to lack as an action film and as a character film, as well as being historically dubious. But I will see it eventually, most likely.

I thoroughly enjoyed this although I can understand the criticisms. It made some questionable creative choices. The scene with Hanks meeting his girlfriend at the beginning was totally redundant. I felt the movie was too short. It could have done with some quieter character moments during the battle downtime. It was fantastically tense though and I enjoyed the battle scenes regardless of their historical accuracy.

Well you’re mostly wrong about all of your assumptions so I’m not sure what you’re reading. This isn’t a historical situation framing a personal story, there is barely a personal story at all. That’s conceivably part of the problem. It’s so short and stitled, you either need to have a bit more or none at all.

The film doesn’t have questionable historical basis; it’s not like atlantic convoys and u-boat wolfpacks didn’t happen. I think the events of the film might have made a little more sense had they taken place 9-12 months later in the war, but whatever–what happens is generally fine in the context of what it’s trying to convey.

And I don’t see how this movie lacks as an action film. It’s a 90 minute drumbeat.

I think we are parsing things differently, then. The questionable historical stuff I refer to is from what people have said–and I have seen in trailers–of the way the battles play out. The situation is of course historical. The behaviors of some of the combatants seems less so. The trailers and the pitch sure seem to me to put Hanks and his character’s challenges at the center of the picture. I’ve read the book it’s based on, and that I would say also worked with character a lot more than pure action, IIRC (it’s been a while). And while I have not seen it, as I noted, from what people are saying at least some folks think the execution is not up to gold standard.

But I’m not judging it or anything, as I haven’t seen it. But based on what I’m reading, I am fine with my preliminary take on it. If when I see it I find I was 180 degrees off, I’ll admit it. No skin off my teeth.

I finally saw this and really liked it, although I agree its accuracy was pretty suspect. I did notice that Hanks was the screenwriter - could that be source of its issues?

Either way, watching it made me re-buy Silent Hunter 3 which hasn’t aged well. I forgot how bad 2005 screen resolutions were and I spent a few hours modding/hacking it to work semi-decently.

It’s based on the book, which is supposedly pretty accurate. He implied in an interview that he got a lot of pressure from the studio bosses to dumb it down.

Wow that’s annoying… especially since (I think) both Band of Brothers and The Pacific were very accurate.

I wonder if Apple had been the studio - if this would have been better? From what I’ve seen Apple is more likely to “stick to the script” with things they bankroll.

Right?

I ended up on this link here. I did download GWX from Bittorrent but I read it may have issues with on the Steam version of SH3.

I was a little leery about installing random pieces of software from this link onto my PC so I did a test run against a virtual PC and no viruses or hacks happened. I haven’t played much but I was able to run it on my secondary 1920x1080 monitor but not (yet) on my main 2560x1440 LCD.

Woof. That’s one hell of a Falcon Dance, right there. I just remember GWX and JSGME and it being all good. It’s been a while, though.

Check in with www.subsim.com, though. For scratching those Herr Kaleun itches, there’s nothing better than GWX.

This guy has a current SH3 playthrough and in the description he lists the mods he uses and the order in which to install them.

Wow I really ended up liking this movie. Boy that Greyhound destroyer was almost a light cruiser… I loved the action in this. Plus hanks. Plus procedural (meaning there was a military thing going)
