Help Choosing a Pre-built Gaming PC Please

That ACER isn’t on the list of certified HDR products.

But it’s got the same specs as the Samsung CHG70 so it’s probably the same panel.

My Samsung is arriving tomorrow. Will post thoughts on it in this forum somewhere.

Congrats @BrianRubin. May your new rig bring you all kinds of space adventures!

is a 500W power supply sufficient for this?

The 1080 only uses around 180W, I doubt the CPU or SSD uses much extra. People tend to assume you need like a 900W PSU when really you don’t.

But if one was so included, it’s super easy to swap out a PSU for something beefier to sleep easier at night (or if they wanted to OC or something).

@BrianRubin did you order the Star Trek ship?

Because you should!

As nice as that is, I need a bit more room and power.

There are a bunch of power calculators you can try builds in… in this case 500W looks ok but without too much headroom for major upgrades.

I highly recommend this monitor arm:

I got these!

Wrong answer.
The correct answer is to get the Enterprise computer in addition to the other one.
That way, you’ll have everything.

I showed that enterprise case to a friend who’s building a new system and wanted to waste a bit of money. He said “It’s nice but I’m not really a star trek fan.” 25 years and I did not know. He probably likes Star Wars or something.

Geezus what.

Yeah, I should unfriend.

Is that like some kind of reality tv show?

Babylon 5, of course.

Man, I gotta tell y’all, as I get closer to actually DOING this – the EVGA card I pre-ordered should be shipping soon, I hope – I keep having all these niggling anxieties about it, such as (stuff in parentheses is me self-talking my anxiety down):

  • What if the video card doesn’t fit into the case? (According to the specs of the case and the card, it should be fine.)
  • What if there’s not enough room for the sound card? (Then maybe you’ll be okay without one, even though you really like having one.)
  • What if the mobo doesn’t have enough USB ports? (It looks to have at least as many as the one you currently have, if not one or two more.)
  • What if you can’t mount all the monitors? (You’ve got a solid plan for that. Trust in the plan. You’ll adapt otherwise.)

So yeah, I’m super excited that this is all actually happening but AHHHHHHHHH.

Thanks again for the help and support y’all. :)

What’s your sound setup?

Currently I have an older Sound Blaster card, and plugged into that are my external speakers and my Roland MIDI units.

Beyond that I have USB headphones and a USB mic.

I ordered myself a pre-built through NZXTs BLD service - pretty much a full specced GTX 1080 for $1850.

Will report back once I get it in but the prices were pretty competitive when I did some comparison shopping

If the card fits in a PCI-E slot, then it shouldn’t be a problem. If it’s a PCI card then that’s trickier, but you can still find motherboards with PCI slots.

Are the MIDI units for gaming? Do you need the sound card for MIDI out? Not sure how that works TBH.

Yeah, it’s this one!

They sure are. You haven’t played TIE Fighter until you’ve done so with the original MIDI soundtack.

The MIDI unit goes into the line-in port on the sound card. Not sure if motherboards have that, plus I’m something of a nut for sound, so I like having a dedicated sound card.

I know I’m being silly, but this makes me nervous. This is the mobo I’m getting:

The video card takes up 2.75 slots.

As you can see, the PCI-E slot is juuuust under the video card slot, so like I said, I’m likely being silly and it’ll likely all fit together just fine, but it just makes me a tad anxious is all.
