Less Scam / Spoof / Robo - calls lately?

I block any call not on my contacts, so unknowns just ring unless they call a few times back to back, which never seems to happen (thankfully). And I was getting usually 1 or 2 calls a day for the last year or so - just a lot of calls, some days 4 or 5. I just realized seeing this thread I’ve only gotten a handful in the last month. In fact, looking at my call history, it’s dropped off considerably since late March, so I think this definitely improved things.

TMO auto-blocks a solid 3-4/day for me still, but hey, at least they generally don’t even ring the phone

I still get one or two spam calls a day, every one from the same first 6 digits as my phone number.

But now I’ve started getting spam iMessages and yesterday, for the first time, a spam Facetime call.

It seems the robocalls have reduced for me but I’m getting tons of calls now from solar panel companies. I ask them how they got my number and they all reply with the same vague answer about how they knew I’d been looking into it.

Yes, that was true two years ago when Tesla reps had come by the house to do an estimate. So Tesla must have sold my number. Thanks, assholes.

For me they were reduced for a bit, now they’re back to full strength.

My robocall volume has definitely dropped in the last month, but the really odd part is that 100% of them that I still receive are in some Asian language I don’t speak. I did get a new phone (and number) right at the end of 2019 so I have to assume that whoever had my number before was on some foreign lists?

I wonder if Fi finally machine-learned its way to some kind of non-useless blocking, or if the particular jackwagons who found or hit on my number gave up. Sadly, I know which one my money’s on.

I got a text message yesterday. Hi Richard, do you own the house at [my address]?

WTF? Immediately blocked. Creepy.

We received something like that a few weeks ago. They are looking for people who are in a hurry to sell their house. Leeches, real leeches.

We have (in the past) received scam call from people that show up with an ID of my wife’s name and cell number. That seems pretty damn stupid to me.

Yeah I’ve been getting those a lot too. Like @Scuzz said, they’re looking to buy your house for 10 cents on the dollar. I block but they keep coming. There must be millions of them Mr. Rico.

I got an email saying they had my password and video of me watching porn and I had to respond right away or they would send the video to everyone I know. It actually was one of my passwords so I need to fix that.

I get those all the time. Hilarious since I don’t and have never had a camera.

Someone made a lucky guess… 12345?

I think I got one years ago, and yea, I have never owned a camera.

They’re usually old passwords from old breaches. They have no idea if they are actually getting a hold of you or that your address is still good.

Yea I’ve noticed a reduction in calls, but an uptick in texts. The most annoying of which are the ones that group text 20 similar numbers so not only do I get the initial text but then random people cussing out the original text.

Since I started using LastPass all my new passwords are random gibberish I will never be able to remember. However, some older accounts reuse the same passwords. I need to fix that.

So after a period of quiet, the phone scams seem to have re-appeared. I guess the scammers have found a way around whatever countermeasures were put in place. The latest one for me is that the legal department of Service Canada is after me and I should be very concerned about my case being referred to a grand jury. These types of scams do really like to threaten legal action with a grand jury. I guess it sounds very ominous and threatening. It certainly isn’t because it is an actual possibility. Canada no longer uses grand juries.

Yup, the scammers are back at work.

95% of my spam calls are in Chinese. I do not speak Chinese.
