Netflix movie finds

I just watched some movie called “Sleight” on Netflix, and enjoyed it. The kid who played the main character was good.

A trilogy of movies coming:

R.L. Stine, eh? These seemed to be aimed at teens.

For the click averse:

I really enjoyed both Extraction and Bird Box. I haven’t seen the others, though I did try to watch 6 Underground, and the way Netflix counts viewers, I guess I count among its viewers even though I couldn’t take it anymore. 6 Underground was a good reminder that whatever positive feelings Michael Bay earned from me with Transformers: Age of Extinction must have been some kind of fluke, and he’s still a terrible director for action movies.

I believe Extraction is getting a sequel!

Ha ha, 89 million people saw Bird Box!

The only one of those I’ve watched is The Old Guard and I’ve watched a lot of Netflix movies. Whatever their mainstream formula is, it doesn’t work for me.

Hmm let’s see.

Extraction: serviceable. Has a few fantastic shots, such as the pseudo one take. Story is meh, but direction and technically above average. But as far as presenting visually compelling action scenes it has enough to recommend it. Just don’t expect much from the story. (Triple Point is their action film in this genre that has the best story)

Murder Mystery: meh. Wife wanted to see it. Wasn’t terrible, wasn’t particularly good. Was fine with a glass of wine and some ice cream.

The Old Guard: hmm. Not as good as Atomic Blonde or Mad Max. Not as bad as Bright.

Enola Holmes: delightful! Their best film by considerable margin. If you have any interest in the theme or setting, it’s worth your time.

Project Power: very flawed. Should have been better, but the writing was just not good. A distinct lack of leveraging the potential of the abilities to show interesting scenes either. Also hire a damn lighting director.

So I’d give a strong recommendation for one, two get moderate recommendations, one is completely Adam Sandler, and one is anti recommended.

I tend to agree, Extraction was war porn but done well, Bird Box despite Tom’s Ha Ha was also a new and fun idea, if not terribly well executed logic-wise. 6 Underground was pretty horrible even after I had put aside my general dislike for Ryan Reynolds after Deadpool. Old Guard, eh, decent concept, needed more flesh on the bone. Didn’t see Spenser, the constant advertising of fucking Post Malone in the thumbnail pretty much guaranteed I was poisoned from the start.

6 Underground is Michael Bay at his worst. Goodness what a waste of my time.

On the other hand Enola Holmes is probably the best I’ve seen last year. <3 Millie Bobby Brown.

That’s a pretty wide range! I liked Old Guard, but it did seem more like a pilot than a movie.

Well there you go, I’m about patient zero for not noticing who directs what, so Michael Bay explains a lot of it.

Things I’m a bit surprised by:

  1. Spenser being that high.
  2. Project Power and Midnight Sky being in the top 10. Guess the pandemic-induced user growth helped push those.
  3. Bright not being in the top 10 despite Netflix certainly having thrown a lot more marketing muscle behind it compared to the two mentioned above.
  4. None of the other Adam Sandler movies? Didn’t Netflix rave about how successful some of them were?

Murder Mystery is an Adam Sandler flick.

I haven’t seen Bird Box, but Spenser probably deserves that spot. I’ve seen most of the other movies in that list, and that’s the only one I remember liking.

Yeah, I know. Hence me saying “none of the other”.

We watched The Woman in the Window last night. Good cast but not a very good movie. Love Amy Adams and she does her best. Oldman and Moore’s talents were wasted IMHO. So many plot holes. Oh well, it does have appearances from Anthony Mackie and Wyatt Russell.

So, ✪✪☆☆☆ then?

It’s Netflix, rating movies is so passe.

Yep. If you watched more than 2 minutes of a movie, it’s considered “watched” by Netflix numbers. That’s the only metric that matters. Did you watch more than two minutes?

Yes? Success!
