Poor Romero

The guy has been reduced to doing a port job of a mediocre FPS.

"Stuart Platt, Executive Producer, THQ Wireless said: “Red Faction will be the first FPS (first person shooter) game on the Nokia N-GageTM. The team at Monkeystone was the obvious choice to work on the development of this latest version of Red Faction for Nokia’s new mobile games deck. They created the FPS genre of gaming with such classics as Quake and Doom, and we are delighted that we can bring this expertise and experience to the Nokia N-GageTM platform.”

The Red Faction game is set in mines run by the Ultor Corporation far beneath the surface of Mars. Parker, a mineworker and the main character, leads a rebellion against the inhuman conditions being imposed by Ultor, while seeking to find the source of a mysterious and deadly plague which is sweeping through the mines. Red Faction action takes place in the subterranean mines, in the high tech laboratories of the Ultor Corporation and in satellites orbiting above the planet Mars.

John Romero, Chief Technical Officer at Monkeystone said: “I am thrilled to be working on a 3D shooter for one of the biggest publishers in wireless gaming. It’s a real challenge to create a fast 3D game on such cutting-edge hardware, and I am loving every minute of it.”

Back when he was at Ion Storm, they worked in a fabulously ritzy penthouse with all-glass walls, but everyone had to work under blankets in order to block out the sun glare on their monitors. I wonder if Romero is sitting in a basement apartment somewhere, coding under a blanket, pretending he’s still in the penthouse?

how painful it must be, I feel worse for Tom Hall though.

They are rebuilding from scratch. This is exactly the kind of work they need to do inorder to win the favor of a decent publisher again.

Wonder if he has made enough money on Doom and Castle Wolfenstein to last him the rest of his life?

I’m sure. Although he did have a fancy car on ebay awhile ago.

Hyperspace Delivery Boy is pretty nice though, as long as you like snes-ish rpglites with sokoban gameplay.

Yeah, Hyperspace Delivery Boy isn’t anything to just snicker at. It’s a pretty good game for the design they were going for. Lots of well-written humor too, Hall’s trademark.

Remaking themselves as cell phone/handheld game producers was pretty smart. They’re in on the ground floor. No reason to think we won’t be hearing a lot more from Romero and Hall someday down the road.

I viewed that sale as part of the maturing process. He cut off the rockstar hair, sold the boy racer Jr. High fantasy car, and quit bragging in public so much. I admire that he has regrouped, and did not just crash & burn.

Looks like a good move to me. Monkeystone is making games for the handheld market, why not make ports too?

Did Romero get rid of that white trash female he was hanging around with ?

The proper expression is “of trailer.”

Sort of. He bought her enough plastic surgery that she’s unrecognizable from her former self of trailer.

Now all she needs is Henry Higgins.

I can’t believe you all speak so disrespectfully of a Gaming God. Don’t you fear that a silicone bolt will strike you down where you stand?

Stevie Case? oof.

I thought it was Portable Housing Sanitation Specialist?

Other than being the sexiest woman in the industry, what has he done? More importantly, what has he done in the last 10 years? How do any of his accomplishments stack up to the rest of videogame history?

It appears that he has done 54 more games than you have.

What has he done that give him game god status? Surely Neptune’s Nasties don’t qualify him for slobbering servitude from the masses. I see very little on that list that makes him worthy of making him the god that so many make him out to be.

Anachronox was a pretty fun interactive movie.
