Real-Time Strategy all purpose discussion thread

Now Rise of Legends won’t event start for me. I fired it up a couple weeks ago when there was the thread about favorite rts. Now it complains that msxml 4.0 is not installed.

Just get the free version, and you are all set!

Well, not really, but you get a free version, so there is that.

Sorry for the derail (and if this was already answered elsewhere), but what training will you be doing for the next 8 months (and however long it’s been already)?

I was hired back in June to be a Disability Claims Specialist for Social Security Administration. And until July, I’ve been going to classes for 8 hours a day to be a Claims Specialist. Which is just about as exciting as you might think.

I’m learning about waiting requirements, how monthly income is calculated, what counts as an Auxialary, and the different rules for different types of auxiliaries, how to use the systems and reports. How to complete the reports. The different levels of appeal and so forth and so on. I assume that it will be a little more straightforward then the classes, since I doubt I will deal too much with things Federal Employee’s disability claims, whose salary prior to 1984 counts for medicare, but not for Disability payments (because Social Security wasn’t taken out for them before 1984).

In any case, it’s my foot in the door, but during the training, I can not use any of my leave, except for emergencies and the like.

The upside/downside is that everything is remote during Covid-19, which makes the classes harder (everything is done through powerpoint meetings on skype or reading) but at least I won’t have to deal with commute to the office for a while.

Repairing the msxml 4.0 install got past this, but the animation still feels off. I thought maybe it was because I’d turned off vsync, but switching that back on doesn’t change. It has possibly always felt like this since I never played it when it first came out. Time for some skirmish games.

Does WARHAMMER 40,000 GLADIUS belong in this list?

@legowarrior there is a new Ultimate Apocalypse release. Looking at the discord though there must have been some drama and the art team left with their assets. From the sounds of it some former UA people are now working on:

Hey folks

Check this out:

Rusted Warfare

There is no story to speak of at all, so if campaigns with a story are your thing, this is not for you. It is reminiscent of total annihilation and sup com in that the focus is on building structures on resources, and upgrading factories to Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and then experimental units, with air, ground and naval units (no infantry but only mechs). I bought it with some reservations as cheap and cheerful RTS’ are usually missing character but I actually really like it (being a big fan of sup com obviously helps). It’s only 4.99 EUR, so not going to break anyone’s bank. It has a steam workshop with mods already adding new units in the base game and / or entirely different themes (eg WW2, red alert 3, Warcraft…) so possibilities are endless.

Part of the appeal is that I have to abandon my windows desktop when I travel and take my apple laptop (m1 silicon), so anything to keep me amused with low system requirements is good. Runs perfectly even with a lot of units (apparently multi threading enables that.) It is also available for iPad so I bought it on there too, although mouse and keyboard is preferred for this old guy.

Edit: bought it the other day but see it actually came out in 2017! I assumed it was new, so posted here. However, I had never heard of it previously (found it quite by chance) so perhaps you folks are unaware.

That is interesting. So, with so much art gone, what happens to the original mod?

Thanks for this…will keep an eye on it.

How well did the iPad version control?

I’m not sure what it means for the future. It looks like they have whatever was currently in the mod when the split happened, but I guess no way to modify those assets now. They were looking for artists to join the team on the discord.

How big can the maps get? Part of what set SupCom apart for me was just the scale. However, based on the screenshots it looks like we’re talking Total Annihilation size maps.

I’d be curious to know if there is anything you think this does better than TA or SupCom.

It’s OK - if you give it time you get used to it. It is as good as it’s gonna get for a tablet. But as an oldie reared on a keyboard and a mouse I’d take that any day.

There is an “earth” map mod in the workshop. I plan to give that a spin and will see how big it is.

Re does it do anything better than TA and SupCom - not that I can tell apart that it runs well on a low spec system, the price is a bargain, and modding has potential through the steam workshop. It’s something light to dip into when your brain is sore after a long day.

I can’t do super large battlefields.

Give me something like Ground Control. Now that was a sweet little RTS.

Or Icewind Dale.

But, I don’t mind going larger, but Dawn of War is about where I cap out. Anything larger, and I feel a bit overwhelmed.

Of course, my other preference is different factions. Something like Age of Empires 2 or Advance War (which isn’t an RTS, but feels like one).

I really wish Massive would take another stab at rts. I doubt Ubisoft would ever let them at this point though. Probably going to have them milking the Division IP forever.

I’d also like to see someone try to expand on what Stardock/Oxide were trying with armies in Ashes of the Singularity and see if they can do it better. I really want to know what the new game is that Oxide is working on, and if it is an RTS using an updated nitrous engine.

A shame too because World In Conflict could be quite enjoyable. Working together as a team of specialised roles across a large battlefield certainly had its moments. Especially with the visual spectacle Massive achieved with the tactical call-ins and such.

Does anyone remember Mindcraft’s “Siege” from 1992? It was the very first game I played that I would classify as an RTS (I always thought calling Herzwog Zwei one was a stretch), predating Dune 2 by a few months.

Now THAT’S an RTS I’d like to see remade. Set in the same universe as The Magic Candle games, it was a giant castle siege simulation. Attacker was all about using engines to bust down walls and gates or engineers to lay down ladders or fill in moats. Defender was all about trying to snipe said attackers and plugging in gaps. After a while, night would fall, units would fall back a little, WIAs would heal and possibly be ready for duty again, and the attacker would press in again. Attacker won if an engineer carried his flag to the central courtyard and ran it up the flagpole to hold it for a full day. Defender won if he prevented that for a set number of days.

To this day, I haven’t seen any other game replicate an epic Minas Tirith style siege like that game did 30 years ago. Not even the actual Battle for Middle Earth games, or any of the Stronghold titles.

That’s cool. Reminds me of the Lord of the Realm sieges (in RTS mode), but done properly.
