Sadly I have not read his work. I mainly know of him because he had the Shelby Foote slot in Ken Burns’s Jazz. His comment about anyone preferring the old style of singing after Louis Armstrong showed up needing to be deported “somewhere not on Earth… Pluto, maybe” has stuck with me.
Sad. I regularly read his column in the Daily News. He had some opinions that were… contrary.
