Russ Solomon, founder of Tower Records, RIP

  1. Died with a glass of whiskey in his hand while yelling at the TV. Legendary.

I was an inveterate scourer of Tower Records import bins for many years. RIP.

The Tower Records doc, All Things Must Pass, is really worth seeing, by the by. He seemed like a cool guy.

Terrific documentary. Chock full of nostalgia and a really compelling look at Solomon and his close circle of Tower folks.

Man, as a Sacramento kid, this one is sad. He’ll be missed. I certainly spent a lot of time in Tower Records all over the area, but it was always special to go to the first store downtown, across from the Tower Theater and Tower Cafe.

Back in the day I was sales manager for a small audiophile record label, and Tower was the 600 lb gorilla in the middle of the room. Industry standard was for retailers to pay on a 30 day cycle, but Tower took 90, and if you didn’t like it, well, you didn’t have to have your product in their stores, either.

Great stores, in spite of that.
