So I Bought a Kindle Fire

Now this is more like it.

Still waiting for a real release date and details, but I’ll happily wait.

A $200 kindle fire with a volume rocker running ICS would be all kinds of awesome. Kal El under the hood is even more so.

From Reuters:

Amazon is to introduce up to five or six tablet SKUs, or stock-keeping units, according Demos Parneros, president of U.S. Retail for Staples Inc (SPLS.O), which sells the Fire.

The tablets will be different sizes, including a 10-inch model, Parneros said. Amazon spokespeople declined to comment on the company’s plans

I wonder if that guy differentiates between tablets and e-readers, because Amazon already has 6 combined Kindle models offered.

“SKU” is meaningless. Could be anything.

I want a polar bear sticker!

So you want the model KF2-0870wGcPB? Does the gentleman prefer white, black or fuscia?

I bought my dad a Fire for his 70th birthday back in April. He doesn’t use it, of course.

My dad is 76. We got him a Fire for Christmas. He reads 2 or 3 books a week on it. He Facebooks, reads his email, and plays the occasional game on it. He carries it everywhere around the house. Recently he had to spend a few nights in the hospital and took it with him. Probably one of the best gifts we’ve gotten him.

Yeah, mine is too given to switching back and forth between paperbacks and his PC. I gambled and lost (actually, I asked first if he’d be interested).

$50 model announced.

7-inch 171 ppi / 1024 x 600 display

If you buy 5, you get the 6th one free.

No joke.

Seriously…it’s so disposable, you can buy one for the dog now.

Looks like new Fire 8 and 10 HD models got announced as well…

I’ve been looking at the fire tablets as a supplement to reading for my GF. She doesn’t want a kindle, since she mainly reads danish books, and those are in short supply in Amazon.com. I figured the Fire Tablet are tablets with enhanced reading capabilities, better than Ipad and the like, or am I wrong in that?

The new ones have a blue filter when reading that’s easier on the eyes, especially at night. It also does less damage to your body clock; staring at all those bright screens in bed is not good for you.

Thanks - I just found that out. One thing that I am unclear on - Is it android compatible, or amazon only? We use a danish service called Mofibo, which is basically lending books, thus, no downloading, which works fine on Ipads. Its an IOS or Android app, though and I see its a modified android OS?

By default, Fire tablets connect solely to the Amazon Appstore for app installations–and there’s a pretty decent selection of apps on there! AFAIK, the Fire line still enable side-loading of apps, however,so you can acquire APKs (Android app “installation files”) and install them directly to the device. In the case of a free app, I don’t think there’s a lot of moral hazard in doing so. However, for paid apps, or things that you can’t find a standalone APK for, you’d need to load the real Google Play store onto the tablet, which is a more complicated process.

So, strictly speaking, yes, the Fire is Android compatible and runs real Android apps. However, if the app you want isn’t on the Amazon store, you’ll need to employ other means of installing it.

Aside from that, it’s worth noting that there are blue-filter apps for Android in general (like the lovely Twilight that I use on my Galaxy Note 5), and I’m not aware of many other Fire-specific reading-improving features. I think for now, the Fire tablets are the best/only way to get Amazon Prime video onto an Android device (they won’t release an app for it onto regular Android devices), but aside from that, they don’t provide a lot of benefit over a real Android tablet that you don’t need to jump through hoops to use however you want.

Not better, no. They are most certainly cheaper. If she literally only uses it for reading, not much reason to buy an ipad over one of the kindle fires with better screens (not the super cheap ones). Note that normal kindles can load books from third-party sources. You just convert in calibre and load them up. They cannot read DRMed epubs, though.

IOS will get the blue filter stuff (which Apple calls Night Shift) in iOS 9.3.

The HD6 looks like a pretty decent tablet for $100. I wouldn’t bother with the new Fire tablets, which are clearly as budget as they can get, but the HD6 was last year’s model. My sister got a couple of them for her kids and I really like them. It’s $120, though, if you want 16GB of storage rather than 8GB.
