Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

Inside every virtual ship is a virtual Turing-complete computer?

That was the premise behind 0x10c, which is probably at this moment about as functional a game as SC will ever be.

They are selling $30 pictures of motorcycles now.

Said motorcycles are not available in the game.

How much do you think I could get for this picture:

No price is too high considering that it’s a blank canvas for the imagination. It could be literally anything your heart desires. To name one possible example, it could be a spaceship.

@rrmorton Settle down there poet guy. Let’s not dream too big.

For realsies. $30 motorcycles.

Can you forgo a spaceship and just cruise through space on one of these?

I think there are actually space bikes that look like land speeders. I remember watching a video of someone trying to load one in his ship and it made it explode or crash or lose its polygons or something.

Yep, there’s hoverbikes but none of them are almost exact rip-offs of Batman’s bike from Dark Knight.

I think parents might really want something like this for their kids…

I honestly didn’t believe you. I Googled it. It is real, isn’t it?

I stumbled onto a thread about them on Reddit and figured it would be, well, kind of like this thread. But it’s the exact opposite. People buying 1, 2, all of them, raving about them.

They don’t even exist. It’s just concept art!

Sometimes I wonder why I work hard trying to make an honest living.

They look real to me.

They are like the Trump true believers. No dose of reality or common sense will ever get through to them.

On one level I get it. The customers are excited about the potential of the game world and the presentation is top notch. The images bang loudly on the powerful “status” button, and people crave status. Once a customer is at that point it’s all limbic system, all emotion, and the prefrontal cortex isn’t involved in the decision any more. You’ve got them. “I can spend $30 and be that cool person riding that cool bike, and I’ll be cooler than everyone else in this community who doesn’t have one.” So yeah, reality and common sense aren’t involved in the decision any more.

Brilliant marketing, really. Unethical, sure, but brilliant nonetheless.

Apparently they sold 10,000 of these the first day. Not sure, this is from Reddit. So shameless. I don’t see them ever running out of money. They just need to keep the pre-alpha running forever, and they already have selected for the most weak-willed, hopeless people in society, who will hand them all their money.

This is the Nigerian prince scam of gaming. The scam can only exist while the game is broken and incomplete. It serves as a test, selecting for people who live entirely in their imagination. If the game were good or complete - just as if the Nigerian prince email was well written - they’d attract too many normal people who would overwhelm the game with negativity. Instead, they attract the most vulnerable people in society, who can imagine being in a fully functional universe and will give all their money for that experience.

Those Reddit people are rock stupid.
