Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

Dude, the video is to show things they’ve done in the process of making the game. It’s worth watching for space fans like you, because there are some striking visuals there.

You know me. I’m not a fan of this whole project, but the trailer is worth watching. Just saying.

There are so many other things I’d rather spend 26 minutes on.

Also, I was reminded of this on another forum:

So I guess in seven years, they can say it’s close to ready once again.

Pretty much everything they showed that was gameplay was standard FPS cover shooter stuff. It’s almost like they are just using the Crysis engine…

Hide the boat!

Drag the barrel!

Answer the call of duty!

Cut the door!

Dodge the lasers!

Turn the dial!

Thanks for posting that trailer. I was in bed by the time they revealed it. It’s awesome! That does look like this generation’s Wing Commander.

It’s also great to see a lot of the features we have seen in the pipeline in various development updates come together.

To be honest, I took myself away from this forum. I have found over time that the cynicism and negativity I see in many threads were wearing me down. That’s a reflection of my own state of mind more than anything. I find my tastes differ from most people here, so I found it difficult to feel like I was engaging with people. I needed time away. I’m back because I genuinely love the vision of a space game presented both in the engine trailer and now the Squadron 42 one. Though I should know better than to share that here. :)

I think that’s both true and an unfair assessment. Past (pre-2019) Citizen Cons were rightfully slated for promising things that took a long time to deliver or never showed up (and never will).

But, for those who follow the game, things have changed in recent years. First of all, the vast majority of resources have hunkered down in Manchester and Montréal and been focused on Squadron 42. This has led to a lack of news/progress (beyond the amusing cutlery updates in the monthly reports), but it also means a lot of placeholder features in Star Citizen have progressed far beyond what we have. That’s the kind of stuff demonstrated in the SQ42 trailer above and which we have seen throughout the weekend.

And while there are still some features shown that feel “far away” (as in, can’t know for sure when we will get them), the focus of Citizen Con itself has shifted more to be like Microsoft at game shows, where they focus on stuff you will see in the next year.

We have been seeing progress and updates about those features for a while now. and they are now partially filtering into the Persistent Universe (PU). But the PU has ostensibly been an afterthought. All eyes internally were on Squadron 42. And what they have there looks good.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s not like them selling a dream either. But I am now used to not getting too excited about getting stuff very soon. :)

The boat is new to me. Ground and hover vehicles have been a focus for quite a while. vehicles recently received handling updates. And those same “physics puzzles” are useful in the persistent universe when it comes to manage cargo on planet or in zero G. There are also derelicts with elements of those puzzles you can explore.

Star Citizen is not and hasn’t been for a loooong time only a “load screen into your pilot seat” type of game. It’s not surprising that Squadron 42 goes further into using physics and vehicles in the more controlled confines of the single player game. I’m sure some would be happy with a new Wing Commander that’s only space missions. It’s what I thought I was originally backing. :) But I’ve come to appreciate the scope and gameplay offered by the engine.

A lot of “surprise” or misaligned expectations seem to be because people stick to a resolutely outdated understanding of what the project is. Might not be for everyone. What game is?

Ah. Star Citizen is a scam. Always insightful and never gets old.

Thanks for popping by to let us know. It’s really an awesome engine trailer. But to each their own.

This time it’s “feature complete” and in the “polishing phase”.

I honestly thought it was a good trailer. If that had been released this weekend without all the baggage surrounding it I would be a lot more excited. I mean, it got me to attempt to log in and made me realize my account is tied to my old woh.rr.com email address, which I no longer have access to (so while I guessed my login creds from over a decade ago, it of course sent an authentication code to my old email, so off I went to the account recovery page).

The problem for me with a do anything engine trailer like that is that inevitably the visuals are all over the place. Some of the vistas and things look stunning and beautiful and then you see the individual tree in a landscape bed that reminds me of something I’d see walking around in one of the Mass Effects. Similarly, I can tell that’s Gillian Anderson in the Squadron 42 video, which is neat, but I can’t help but be struck by how facial animation and rendering tech has leaped past what this engine is doing. Compare this to God of War Ragnarok or Horizon Forbidden West and it looks a generation apart.

Anyway, not trying to be overly negative, I think it’s just the inevitable consequence of a single game chasing stunning visuals for this long. If the full Squadron 42 product does come out in the next few years I’ll be very interested in it.

I would too, I think? I’d still be unconvinced gameplay wise, but the visuals are great and it looks like it has some pretty awesome set pieces, so I’d be at the very least intrigued.

I’m glad you’re back.

Heh, I don’t even care if the tech doesn’t look great in certain parts. If they can put out a finished game, I’ll be there for it on Day One.

Oh me too. Just really musing on the fact that you can’t really be perpetually chasing the visual crown for one product as tech will move on and you’ll be stuck reworking all of your assets to try to keep up.

Eventually after infinite money spent, a game emerges. On some level it’s perfectly cromulent for me to spend $40 on a complete game and it doesn’t matter how we got here. This patchwork quilt making game design by stitching together bits and bobs eventually has a game emerge from it.

I don’t know, man. There’s a lot of money thrown around for vertical slices being sold over the years with many of common baseline issues that never really got adressed, paired with cool media releases that overpromise and either never deliver or underdelivered. The only thing I was invested in is Squadron 42 but after so many pressers with random claims of completeness I’m just worn down of it.

What I’ve never understood is how it generated so much income after the years of (what I assume to be deliberate) misleading. I’d be glad if there turns out to be an actual product after all the years of troublesome development, but please excuse my disregard of anything said or shown in some media releases of the supposed product. Show, don’t tell.

I mean, is it though? :P

Perfectly understandable to me. I have unsubscribed from many threads (including this one) for the same reason. I just checked back here to see if there was anything about Citizencon. Thanks to your post, I ended up watching quite a bit of the coverage and having a good time with it :)

Glad the post was useful. This was a good year, full of cool stuff. Not great for my timezone but I enjoyed what I caught

The new map, the new flight model and ship huds as well as the updated character creation (it was fun to see characters created live during a panel appear in the SQ42 trailer) are all things I’m looking forward to in the next few quarters.

Also hopefully getting invited to try out Pyro soon

The server meshing Dev demo was very cool, but I’m not at all confident that’s going to be in game before next Cit Con.

As for SQ42, if they can polish out most of the SC jankiness for the single player experience, it looks like it’s going to be quite the ride.

I will happily, joyfully play S42 if they’ve managed to pull it off. I want to believe that it will arrive “soon”, but given the track record I’m going to be pretty skeptical until I see it. (And then honestly, see it reviewed.)

I don’t say much in this thread @Wendelius since I haven’t preordered and doubt I’ll play the game, but I do appreciate your reporting as I watch the game’s development from the sidelines. So thanks for the update!

The word ‘this’ is doing a lot of work in that sentence! Given how long it’s taken and with an unknown number of years to go, who knows which generation will actually get to play this? Not trying to pile on, just thought it was a funny statement. I do hope you believers get the game you want someday but I remain a bit doubtful it’ll happen.
