Star Realms

Oh, bummer, they’re up against Dead of Winter. Sorry, Star Realms.

This should add a breath of fresh air to the game!

Ooo. I’d love to see some new cards for the app version, or I guess I’ll hope to see them sold with a boxed set someday.

On the other hand… That Merc Cruiser looks like it needs a nerf right out of the gate. :-)

The expansion will be released this Thursday: http://www.pockettactics.com/news/ios-news/screenshots-gambit-first-expansion-star-realms-coming-ios-android-later-week/

From the creators of Star Realms comes Epic! Looking forward to reading details on this puppy on BGG!

Interesting. It says TCG, but it looks more like an LCG.

TCG? LCG? What does that mean?

TCG = Trading card game. Typically associated with blind boosters and such. Your decks only have the stuff you were lucky enough to pull out of a foil pack.

LCG = Living card game. Everyone has access to everything. We can all buy the same box of stuff, and it’s going to have the same cards.

I think the reason they’re saying TCG is that I believe LCG is trademarked by FFG. Based on what they’re describing, it sounds more like an LCG. Everyone can buy an Epic Card Game box and they’ll have the same cards in it as everyone else. Updates will likely be in the small packs like the Star Realms mini-expansions.

According to Star Realms Support, not having a notification number on the game’s badge under iOS was a design decision. They’ll “reconsider adding an icon badge for future updates.”

Lack of notifications directly contributed to me timing out on my last couple of mp games. If I am checking regularly for turns it isn’t a problem, however, life has a way of interrupting. Without a notification to remind me, I can easily go a day or two without checking, and then I lose the game.

Not a huge deal, but enough that I haven’t played any mp games since. Not that I would necessarily even know if someone sent me an invite.

They just announced some new upcoming features:

Coming soon! The ability to play with Gambits only, or with the Ships and Bases from the Gambit Expansion only, or with both! -

Coming soon! Campaign sync across devices.

Coming soon! Major fix for crashing on Android 5.0 devices

Coming later this year - Crisis expansions!

Also, the physical version will get a second gambit set in September, as well as a whole new box set called Colony Wars after Thanksgiving.

The update with campaign sync across devices will be live today. Finally!

I was thinking of playing this again on iOS but am confused about all the expansions. Are all the expansions available on iOS? I can not figure how to purchase them through the game.

Yeah, that’s rather obscure. As I recall you must start a game with expansions, and then the game will prompt you to buy them if you don’t have them.

You can also try to play a locked campaign mission. You’ll be prompted to buy the stuff you’re missing.

I learned during my trip to Origins this weekend that there is a Facebook community fan page for Star Realms:

If you join that group, you can participate in a online tournament that they’re starting up in a couple of weeks. The winner gets to be on a future SR card.

Is this still the best all-purpose Star Realms thread?

I just discovered the game through some co-workers, I’ve been playing the free version on my iPad for a couple nights now (just easy/medium A.I. battles, no expansions) and I dig it!

Is there a consensus on which expansions are worth having? I’m not sure if all the physical expansions are available in the iOS version, but I’ll take recommendations for either since I’ll probably buy a real deck to play with friends.

And as for the base game, has it held up over time as pretty balanced? Are any factions or strategies dominant at high levels? I like the variety—such as I understand it so far—but I’d hate to find out that “oh no one serious ever plays X, everyone does Y now” or something.

I like all the expansions, but there’s a lot of folks who avoid Gambits and Events since they add a ton of randomness into the game. I tend to play with pretty much everything against my real-life friends (both in person and on the app) but avoid Gambits/Events when doing stuff like Slack and Facebook tournaments.

I don’t think there’s a particular strategy or set of cards that’s terribly unbalanced. Certainly there are some strong cards - Ark, Emperor’s Dreadnaught, etc - but I’ve not seen any serious concerns on that front.

You should definitely join the Slack channel to play some games online, @WhollySchmidt ! @Dave_Perkins has the joining details, I believe.

Agreed, I like all of the expansions. I avoid Gambits in tournaments. I like Events because as often as they screw me, they can also give me an edge that can bring me back from the edge of doom. They keep things interesting.

Always up for games at DennyA. And I really need to get back to the Slack channel and check in.

Only thing I don’t like is the new feature that challenges don’t affect your rating. My matches with randos are so frequently against level 40+ players that there can’t be any kind of level comparison in the matchmaking – it just be completely random with no level consideration.

I feel that Colony Wars was transformative, in that it replaced base set with something more finely balanced. Not that the original was horrible, but Colony Wars is superior.

I own all the expansions, because they are so cheap, but typically avoid Gambits. Luck-of-the-gambits can put one player in a seriously strong position and the other in a very weak one before the first turn is played.

Mostly when I play multiplayer I go for Colony Wars + Events + Heroes.
