Stardock owns Star Control and is planning an "XCOM-like" reboot

Some serious HAL 9000 shit going on at 00:23!

I like it. I see it gets released on my bday, maybe I should buy it as a present :-)

I’ll say Happy Birthday now, as launch day might be quite busy. :)

So little rant moment. :)

Been traveling a lot this week and one consistent thing that has come up is that this is definitely a totally different level of game than anything we’ve done before.

It’s not just that the budget of this game is > than Ashes + OTC + GalCiv III + Sins combined, that’s more of an asset cost. It’s just the first time we’ve ever been able to just focus on a single title.

Of course, that means risk. 2017 was the first year we didn’t release a new game since…maybe GalCiv I? I’d have to look. But that was the trade-off of putting everyone everyone on the games unit onto a single game. It’ll be interesting to see the effect.

Many of you guys on QT3 know our games inside and out. Many of you know me. I’ve been posting on here since before GalCiv I came out when I was, effectively, a software engineer working on Object Desktop who worked on games as a hobby.

Star Control is the game that is really the result of Elemental and the sale of Impulse. It’s the culmination of not just the 5 years we’ve been working on it but many years of wishes of being able to make a game that showed off what we were capable of producing if we just had the budget and time to do it.

I’m eagerly looking forward to the fruits of all Stardock’s labor, Brad. This is looking pretty awesome.

@Brad_Wardell good luck.

I’m definitely interested.

Didn’t play Star Control back in the day but whatever game is in that video is something I need to play. Looks awesome!

Yes care factor has gone from “zero” to “medium/high”.

So review copies are supposed to start going out by end of the week.

A few new shots:

Full on “Civpedia” feature in here. There’s a pretty funny story on how I got this in the game @tomchick knows about.

One thing I can’t take screenshots of (spoilers) are those Objectives and Captain’s Logs tabs which keep you up to speed on what’s happening.

Little thing here. You can see how much damage different environments will do to your lander and how much your upgrades are mitigating it.

The Terran Cruiser got a new model. This one is premised on being the natural progression from the player’s Vindicator prototype. Though, unlike the player’s ship, the Terran Cruiser has no hyperspace capabilities.

This week’s dev journal talks all about the lore in Star Control: Origins!

I misread that as “the love in Star Control: Origins” at first and thought oh crap, Bioware style romances?

Oh, things with that Tywom guy are very very explicit. ;)

LOL - looks good, Brad.

Review copies of the full game go out on Monday.

Here are some highlights:

Not apparent here but a lot of work has been made to make this run even on very low end hardware (like, 10 year old hardware). This is done by requiring at least 4 logical processors (2 core + hyperthreading counts) so that the game can effectively have 4 graphical threads if necessary.

You can change the difficulty any time from options but you can also set up the default now.

Lots of new buildings on planets have been added. We’ll be making a lot more pieces asap so that players can create and share their own building ideas.

Close up of the Terran Cruiser. Since the Vindicator class (your ship) is supposed to be the prototype, the first “mass produced” cruiser from Star Control is designed to look like a natural progression.

Fingers crossed :)

Re: that colours screen: An option to ‘favourited’ and have those colours/parts listed first could maybe be handy if not already there.

Hey, Brad, have you guys talked about the role that buildings play in the game? Are you settling on worlds?

You aren’t building buildings on worlds. They’re more like quest destinations. This way, when you write a story, you can have the place you visit look as you describe it rather than generic.

New trailer!

It’s looking enticing. Looking forward to the first reviews.

Love it!
