Starsector: Best space combat 13 years in the making - 0.96 out (2023 update)

Enjoying 0.8 much more than the previous version. A couple questions that I can’t find info about online.

  1. What do you do with the LPC’s you can buy on the market?
  2. After surveying a planet it will say something like “moderate ore deposits” or something along those lines. Am I supposed to be able to mine that material?

My first game sure didn’t last long. Made a ship, flew towards a planet, they met me and kept insisting I turn on my transponder, then I died.

Yeah, they tend to prefer that you keep your transponder on at all times.

I don’t even know how I turned it off though, unless I hit a wrong key or something. I would have gladly complied if given the chance!

@pizzaddict

  1. You can load fighter LPCs into a ship hull that’s a carrier. They’re basically like weapons you can put into weapon slots, but fighters.
  2. Not yet. Exploiting resources you discover via surveying is slated for upcoming patches. So for now it’s essentially flavour, but it does contribute to the level of the survey data you get from surveying.

@rowe33 : The step everyone misses in the tutorial is you have to hit “F5” to quicksave after doing basically ever step to allow the tutorial event to advance. There’s text telling you to do this, but it’s not super prominent. If you don’t do that before you fly to the target planet, the tutorial doesn’t give you the ability to turn on your transponder and then the Hegemony gets mad at you.

Ahh interesting, I did quicksave but it was probably too late. I’m still getting used to my Mac over a year later and I can never remember whether to hit ‘fn’, ‘control’, ‘option’, or ‘command’ to make the F5 key actually be F5!

I had been watching some let’s plays of this recently and it lulled me into forgetting how awful I am at piloting my starships.

While waiting for final release of this game I wondered what other games of this type might I play? Deathwar 3030 Redux looks similarish, but it too is early access. Other than Rebel Galaxy, are there other recommendations of similar games on GOG or Steam folks would offer?

There are no games like Starsector around (and the few that come close in a sense - but still not really that close - are still in Early Access, like SPAZ 2 and Starpoint Gemini Warlords). Closest game in general “feel” is Mount & Blade, which is of course not a space game, so yeah.

Just get Drox Operative already.

3030 Deathwar is amazing and should be out of early access soonish.

Drox Operative is pretty cool, I liked that one quite a bit. The one thing that I always dislike about Soldak games is the itemization is so bland and boring, but it’s made to be a fairly big part of the game considering it’s an ARPG. Still a fun game, though!

To at least put something in my post on topic, is there any sort of UI scaling for Starsector? I have a 1440p monitor and the game runs great, but I wish I could make some of the text larger.

I just started, but controlling the ship is a lot harder than it looks. It kind of feels like there isn’t enough feedback on my speed/direction (probably because I am so new).

This game has gone from 0 - 100 on my hypetrain in record time. At least until Objects in Space comes out, this is hitting the spot for my ultimate ‘trader on the outer rim’ simulation. Reading back over the dev blogs for the last couple of years I’m just really impressed by the design choices he’s made to let the game deliver the type of experience I’m after.

So it turns out I didn’t actually forget how awful I am. I just forgot how useful it is to have a decent load out and a balanced fleet supporting me.

Having a couple of Wolf frigates handy can really turn the tide for you in early battles.

Wow, really great game. Thanks for the heads up. Purchased and enjoying!!!

Played a bit tonight. Wow this is really coming along!

I acquired my first capital ship last night, and took it for a little spin… in the simulator. Turns out most enemies run for the hills at the sight of a fleet as big as mine has gotten.

Here’s a small selection, all I can fit in the simulator’s deployment limit. In the middle is the Conquest-class battlecruiser Periphetes, mounting gauss cannons, heavy autocannons, and maulers in broadside batteries, along with a pair of Cyclone Reaper torpedo launchers in the bows. Some tactical lasers provide all-around punch, and point-defense lasers and flak cannons finish up the fit. To the far left, under the status text, is the Cu Roi, a Condor-class light carrier which has served me in good stead keeping the fleet in fighter cover.

Over the course of my time in the sector, I’ve recovered the other three ships following battles. The cruiser to my left is the Hashmallim, equipped to provide fire support at close range. The destroyer to the right is the Centaur, a heavily-armed gunship with flak cannons for self-defense and torpedoes for a heavier punch. To the far right is the Tempest, an advanced attack frigate. It’s the fastest, most maneuverable thing in the fleet, and frequently sees deployment on the flank of a retreating enemy to slow them down and allow the rest of the fleet to catch up.

Enemy in sight! The opposing fleet has a pair of heavy cruisers, a light cruiser, a destroyer, and a frigate.I start off shooting at the light cruiser. (Since most of my guns are broadside mounts, the ship-handling problem is a little trickier.

As I close in on the first of the enemy cruisers, my second torpedo barrage hits home.

Swinging around to unmask the broadside batteries, the mightly Periphetes makes short work of its first target.

The second cruiser has a destroyer in tow, of the Hammerhead class. The Hammerheads punch well above their weight. I have three in my hangar, all of which are a joy to fly. By running up the screen, opposite the heavy cruiser’s movement, I can pull the destroyer away from the cruiser and destroy it separately.

Having done that, a torpedo barrage serves to finish off the last enemy ship, my other escorts having disposed of the frigate.

This has been fleet combat with Fishbreath.

This might really be the game to beat once it hits 1.0. It’s kinda approaching that now.

Fonts look very small. Is there a way to increase font size?

I have looked around a bit today, I currently see no way to do so.
