Stellaris grand strategy space game by Paradox discussy thingy thready thingy

yeah “This is what we do when you dont surrender.”

It would be interesting to have some mechanics around whether terror actions drive the target empire to surrender or more determined resistance.

You’d think there would be no point surrendering to exterminators, but you could imagine a breakdown of social order that amounts to the same thing. Given that exterminators are kind of in a state of permanent war, they would need different ‘surrender’ mechanics anyway.

The Wiz said something along the lines of that there will be a major penalty for blowing up a planet. I would assume doing so would turn the galaxy against you.

Interesting. History has plenty of examples of soliders who simply fought to the death because the aggressor was known for executing everyone who surrendered anyway.

Likewise the Mongols were most successful when they kept their word, on both sides of the coin.

Yeah I think when fighting the purifiers, swarm, exterminators, it would be a balance between panic and resolve. The diplomatic penalty for those types is huge from the start, but I think some other sort of parameter would reflect the willingness to sacrifice and take risks to face the threat. At the same time it’s hard not to imagine some sort of negative consequences setting in if the swarm has already eaten three nearby planets and now they are heading for you.

Actually the whole war treatment of killer empires in 2.0 is a little unclear to me. They have a special casus belli they can use whenever they want and they get to keep what they take (don’t need claims) - and others can keep what they take from them. Is it possible to actually make peace once war is declared?

I agree, that would take the game to interesting places.

Okay, the Space Mongols sound pretty cool.

There’s clearly an influence from of Hordes in EU4 (along with a pinch of condottieri) but I also see some of the Sins of a Solar Empire pirates in there too.

I wonder if the galaxy will get a tad crowded. Could be interesting to deal with though. I also welcome a more dynamic regular pirate mechanic, and a reason to fill in gaps in the map. That feels like a pretty natural process.

I wonder if those mechanics will allow to mod in a faction like the Exters from Dan Simmons’ novels. Right now it sounds too much like the Mongols/Goths from Outer Space - fun but a tad cringeworthy.

I have no problems with Goths from Outer Space. In fact, if I were to ever form a band, that would be such an awesome name.

Reminded me of the Vaygr from Homeworld 2 a bit.

I haven’t played Stellaris in almost 4 months because reading the devlogs makes me not want to play the current version.

I don’t really have time to play anyway, but I have the same feeling.

The expansion is far enough away, it usually wouldn’t be enough to deter me. But the fact that this expansion address THE major complaint I have about the game (and it’s a big one)… yeah, I’m not firing this up until Apocalypse comes out. I have zero interest in playing the current version compared to what is coming down the pipe.

Here’s to hoping it’s not more than a couple months away.

Do you mean like this

but with the motorik beat a bit more salient?

Could “destroy x planets” or "exterminate x population " also form victory conditions?

Maybe destroy all other home worlds?

Owning x% (I can never remember the amount) of the habitable planets in the galaxy is the victory condition you’ll trigger every time in my experience, so I imagine destroying habitable planets will decrease the number you need to control. I don’t think they’ll do anything as straight-forward as “you win if you explode 30 planets”. The victory condition is pretty much set as - even if the entire galaxy united against you, your triumph is inevitable, so here’s a pop-up, enjoy!

Edicts, Campaigns and Ambitions

Empire-wide edicts look extremely powerful. It would be interesting to decide whether you really need to expand into those systems right now, or get a +20% mineral boost for a while? I’m concerned about scaling for the energy-using version though.

There’s also this from Martin:

It can’t be a release date announcement already, can it?

I would almost disappointed if the “You’re going to want to watch” is about a release date only. I mean, I will find out soon enough without watching, I’d assume. On the other hand, I don’t know what it could be other than a release date. Some big feature? A new crisis?
