The A.I. Thread of OMG We're Being Replaced

When I ask Google Maps to give me walking directions to the store down the street, it does a passable job, but misses the fact that there’s a sidewalk that cuts over from the alley to the library parking lot and cuts off about a block of travel. ChatGPT is actually amazing, in largely the same way that Google Maps is. Just as with any piece of software, there are edge cases and odd uses cases where it’ll give screwy results. What ChatGPT isn’t is a search engine or fact machine. It’s really good at providing suggestions, generating semi-creative text, generating and translating code, exploring a topic through conversational questions (see the snippets I posted in the non-PR thread I made (and am trying to boost)), etc. It’s better at “fuzzy” things than things with definite answers. It will get math questions wrong sometimes, but is pretty good at providing recipe suggestions for a romantic dinner given your food preferences and skills.
