The coming 2024 government shutdown?

No, it’s a handful of crackpots who don’t like the deal.

You should not enable them.

We should give them whatever they demand, to stop them from holding hostages and demanding stuff.

Seems like the Republicans also have some simple options to avoid the damage as well.

Don’t be a fool! Only Democrats can stop this. There is nothing any Republican can do. /s

I actually think Dems agreeing to confirm Johnson in a Speaker battle in exchange for a clean vote on the deal is good politics. If the crazies depose Johnson after the vote though, he’s on his own. But there’s no reason right now for the Dems to agree to anything. Johnson hasn’t been challenged yet.

If you are on a bus with an idiot who refuses to turn the wheel and avoid driving off of a cliff, and you ALSO refuse to turn the wheel because they could… Then you are also an idiot.

Apparently there are some Dems who are willing to go on the record that they will support Johnson in case of an ouster attempt.

Maybe? None of them are willing to say so on the record.

In the end, if the Reps try to oust Johnson, it’s basically going to go the way Biden and Jeffries want it to go. It would be silly IMO not to try to get more out of Johnson in return for giving Johnson more.

That’s the thing, isn’t it. When McCarthy was facing an ouster, he was deliberately giving the finger towards Dems, so letting him hang was the right call.

If Johnson won’t be intransigent and plays ball, then not ousting him can be the correct call. But that support can not and will not be free.

So it’s his call. If he goes the route of McCarthy and actively antagonizes Dems during the process? Fuck him.

Yeah, it’s telling that none of the Democrats saying they were open to bailing out Johnson here would go on record, and today their are representatives who ARE going on record saying “Yeah, we’ll help. But same as we said with his predecessor: talk to (Democratic minority leader Jefferies) Hakeem if you want our help.”

That’s the play that should be done. You want Dem support, you gotta meet the Dems at least some of the way.

Trying to buy more time.

Wait, suddenly the House is voting on a CR?

Edit: House passes the CR, leaning heavily on Dem votes. 106 Republicans voted against it.

How long until the motion to vacate?

CR is pretty much a trash solution. Better than a shutdown, but ultimately a failure of government.

Shutdown averted for now.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/18/politics/congress-shutdown-deadline-senate/index.html

So Congress kicked the can last week, and now they went on recess. Because that’s all they ever do now.

So they aren’t doing any work, and then in a month we get to have them come back and scramble because instead of solving the issue they just took another vacation. Actually, they’re scheduled to take TWO vacations between now and March.

And when they get back it will be time to avert yet another shutdown deadline.

Have y’all considered voting harder?

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but y’all in CA need to move away from your coastal oasis and move to Michigan, Georgia, and PA. I remember getting an Uber from LAX on a visit to the US, and the guy was telling me how he recently moved to California from Wisconsin. He proceeded to complain about politics and Trump the rest of the trip.
