The Fall of Harvey Weinstein

Man, this Weinstein scandal has shaken Hollywood.

Maybe we should put together a list of Hollywood power players who didn’t abuse people. That might be easier.

This is definitely bigger than I though, and those guys in Italy, prostitution… really? It’s no wonder these women took so long to come forward.

Just another day on Twitter.com

I wonder how many people commenting about how no one spoke up have every had a mentor. Or a boss. And thought of sitting down and confronting them directly over rumors.

I’d like to know how you frame that conversation. How do you frame it without proof? How do you frame it when its rumor? How do you frame it at all?

I don’t think its possible, without incredibly damaging your relationship and losing that mentor. Its way more aggressive than people think. You would have to be able to confront them with direct information, through the grapevine is not nearly enough.

This is why its important to go to HR or the police if its a harassment or crime. Unless you were in direct conversation with an alleged victim, how would you know?

Its incredibly brave to go to the police after being assaulted. Its incredibly brave to confide in someone. And it seems, based on these stories, rare. But without that, who in their right mind confronts their mentor?

Anyone talking about this, or just pointing fingers? Because rational and reasonable behavior is the key to understanding this, as is the power dynamics behind relationships.

A sobering read.

My children grew up with stories of their father’s adventures. They did not grow up with stories of mine. I didn’t tell them the story of the 16-year-old family “friend” who babysat while his parents and mine went out to dinner the year I was 11, how he followed me around the apartment, tugging on my blouse and telling me I should take it off, pulling at the elastic waistband of my pants and telling me I should take them off, how I finally locked myself in my bedroom and didn’t come out till my parents got home.

A ton of women I know have dropped it on Facebook. And also a bunch of them I know didn’t that I know could/should have.

The ones I know otherwise on are now “conservatives” so maybe that has something to do with it.

How are we men supposed to just know that forcibly cornering a woman and masturbating in front of her and a nearby potted plant isn’t appreciated?

Like I said to my fifth ex wife, I can’t read your mind, woman!

No one meets in person anyone. It’s all online. Problem solved!

Hmm. Neogaf seems to be caught up in a sexual assault accusation against its owner. Site is unstable, lots of moderators banned suddenly, etc.

Uh, the story is developing, as they say…

Well, they did have an ex-mod get arrested for child pornography, so the members should be used to a bit of scandal.

I never knew about the ex-mod story. That’s the guy that banned me from NeoGAF too. Jeez.

What’s the deal with the three seashells?

The Three Seashells.

Quite fitting that a thread about Weinstein literally leads to shit.

According to a new report by the L.A. Times, filmmaker James Toback would use his credentials to get the attention of young women hoping to become actors, and he’d allegedly invite them to private interviews or auditions where he would ask “humiliating personal questions” about their sex lives. At that point he’d “dry-hump them or masturbate in front of them, ejaculating into his pants or onto their bodies and then walk away.” He’s denied any wrongdoing in a statement, saying that he never met any of the women in question—or only spent five minutes with them and has “no recollection” if he did—and he says that it’s been “biologically impossible” for him to do what he’s been accused of for the last 22 years because he’s had “diabetes and a heart condition that required medication.”

Re Neogaf: It’s crazy to hear about all this dark stuff. I never didn’t know much about Evillore, except that he had a temper and was quick to ban people who disagreed with him, or anything those awful mods (the only mod I followed on the site was Nirolak who offered excellent industry analysis). I stuck exclusively to the gaming side, where it was a pretty helpful spot for news aggregation and technical support, and the community was nice having a mix of enthusiasts, journalists, developers, and PR (well, I won’t miss this last one much), although there were certainly issues.

It looks like Gaffers Jason Schreier and Patrick Klepeck’s respective outlets will be investigating these developments.
