Me in 2018:
Sinema will be the new Manchin, likely the most conservative Democratic Senator in the Senate. She’s anti-tax, anti-regulation, as rabidly anti-immigration as the GOP caucus, pro-police, pro-surveillance. She voted with Trump more than 60% of the time in the House even though she represents a heavily Clinton-voting district. She’s gonna drive us progressives crazy.
Me in 2021:
The dress code for the Senate is artificial, misogynist (women weren’t allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor until 1993) and stuffy, and she still was well within its parameters. I just get very wary of commenting on someone else’s appearance, clothing, voice, walk etc. Those characteristics have often been/are often used to code for sexism and racism.
I feel like it’s possible to criticize Sinema’s policy preferences while still defending her against the Senate’s classist and misogynist dress code requirements.
