The GOP is still morally corrupt, even if Discourse breaks

What, “it’s just math” was too subtle? I need to up my game.

Yeah, there’s absolutely no historical precedent for a party that caters to the cultural and political dominance of white people pivoting to support the civil rights and economic interests of marginalized minorities. Can’t happen.

Well, the party did. And then all racists from that one wing switched parties. And their new home was, and continues to be, all:

Getting to the point where the Democrats were at in 1965 took about a century.

Yeah, but we already have a Democratic party. The reason why this will never happen is because Republican party leaders know that without the racist base, they won’t ever win elections.

I suppose it is the Hill and not Rubio who refers to this as ‘rebranding’, a term which suggests that this is more about change in perception than it is about actual change. But Rubio only touches on a couple of policy things: trade protectionism and law & order. Hard to see how that’s going to drive a mass movement of working class people to the party, or erase the legacy of 5 decades of racism and bigotry.

What about taxes, wages, benefits, working conditions, affordable housing, decent public schools, affordable college? Or does he just plan to keep selling the idea that all we have to do is to give job creators the right incentives and everything else will magically follow?

This was the exact thing I was going to point out. The Republican Party grew in strength because of its racism and suppressive policies. They’re equally all about helping themselves as much as possible at the expense of taxpayers. It’s why the rich keep getting tax breaks and loopholes. This is the entirety of the Republican party platform with anti-abortion thrown in. There is no way they would ever change because they would lose the power of the crazy vote.

They’re pulling from non-black minorities by lying about the social based policies the Democrats are pushing and calling them socialism while linking them to the countries some of those groups fled from. It’s not a hard stretch to think they will keep doing that so long as the Democrats keep letting them.

They were actually successful doing this this time around.

I feel like what’s more likely is a schism in the Democratic party, into progressive and centrist wings, and the centrist Democratic party will just become the new Republican party, absorbing the non racist elements.

So in your future there are either three parties (Progressives, the “New Democratic Party”, and the left over Nazis), or for some reason these centrist Democrats and Republicans get comfortable with the Nazis.

Neither is going to happen.

Democrats are not going to get comfortable with Nazis. If they were okay with that, they wouldn’t be Democrats right now. We already have a party for Nazis they can go to.

I feel like the Nazis won’t actually be a real party.

They’ll be like "the constitution’ party or whatever… some trash third party that runs people like Pat Buchannan.

OK, so just to review, we’d end up with:

The Progressive Party - only a portion of the people in the current Democratic Party would be included
The Nazi Party - only a portion of the people in the current Republican Party would be included

The New Democratic Party - approximately 60-70% of the electorate

So Progressives and Nazis would never win an election ever, so we’d have a single-party country.

I get that you have a dream where the socially liberal but fiscally conservative base of each party somehow come together and make out, but you are describing a fantasy world that will never happen.

Even in countries with Parliamentary structures they don’t get this sort of uber party consolidation.

I’d also like to point out that a very small percentage of Republicans rejected Trump. It was enough to help decide the election, but there is not a huge movement of Republicans who are eager to shake him off - he’s just fine with them.

Also, #TheyAllWonReelection

Sad but true.

That video and that quote… so good.

Note that Rubio said they should “rebrand” as those thing, not necessarily actually change any policies.

And I’ve seen this idea floated by conservatives I know. That the parties are already flipping or some horseshit.
Meanwhile Mitch McConnell exists and their stimulus check isn’t ever coming.

They say it every time they lose. They want to change messaging, but they don’t actually change anything.

No doubt about it. Thanks Coach Tommy.

This must be the soul searching we heard so much about in 2008-9.

I fully expect it to go as far as that did.
