The One and Only Ivan - There's a gorilla in the mall!

I get that the actual story of Ivan is pretty awful and depressing, so Disney opted to kiddy this up, but sheesh. As someone who actually lives in Tacoma and whose wife’s relative used to be the GM of the B&I mall, this is just insulting to Ivan.

Yeah, I watched that trailer and had the same reaction. The battle to free Ivan is something I remember throughout my childhood. It was a huge deal when he was finally released from his concrete cell. Anyone who grew up in Seattle in the 70s and 80s basically grew up with Ivan.

Is it actually Disney’s fault or is it because the movie adapts a children’s book that already did it?

I read the book. It is a sanitized version of events, but this is so much more goofy looking.

Ah, okay, so it is further sanitization on top of the book. My daughter read it in elementary school but I haven’t, so I wasn’t sure if the trailer/movie goes even further.
