The US Economy Catch-All Thread

For those unaware, the growth rate in 2018 was recently revised down to less than 3%.

What stupid rules is this guy making his kid play under? There aren’t taxes in Monopoly.

Heh. Yeah, a special rules version where there’s taxes, in a game where taxes can’t be spent on anything like roads, schools, parks upkeep, etc.

Edit: I looked up the Monopoly Chance and Community Chest cards. Apparently there is a “poor tax” of $15 under Chance (but is a Speeding Ticket in the UK version, which is what I played), and a School fee of $150 under Community Chest cards that is specified as a School tax.

You can be assessed for street repairs, which is essentially a tax, and a hard-hitting one if you have a lot of property. It’s like $50 a house, $200 a hotel. If you have developed a lot of properties but are cash poor, it can lead to you having to sell houses and hotels back to the bank.

For those that want some advice on how to play Monopoly and win.

Also, advice on volcanoes. It’s an interesting episode, if you like Paula Poundstone.

Haha, what in the world.

My theory:

Trump actually cared enough about China allowing their currency to drop to ask someone why they did that. This advisor (probably using lots of pictures and as many one-syllable words as they could muster) explained that a weak currency makes your exports more valuable to other countries.

This little factoid wormed its way into Trump’s skull and nestled into the soggy mess that serves as his brain, so now he thinks that a weak dollar must be better than a strong dollar.

Dear god that makes sense.

Nah, it’s just part of his idea that the Fed is too hawkish and slowing the economy. He’s made the same comments before

Doesn’t it also help his overseas properties if the dollar is weak?
I remember that being a thing back when he complained about the dollar being too strong back in like the campaigns or something.

I fucking hate fox, so not going to hot link this, but holy fucking shit can they never be honest?

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a grim update Wednesday to its economic outlook for the next decade, predicting average national deficits of $1.2 trillion every year through 2029, due in large part to recent budget and border security bills.

The CBO claims that the new figures are the result of recent legislation, particularly the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019 – which included higher discretionary funding limits for 2020 and 2021 – and new appropriations for disaster relief and border security.

Not a single IOTA or mention of that fucking tax break.

That’s because tax breaks increase federal revenue!

– Said to me seriously by every Republican voter I speak to on the matter.

Right, because the laffer curve. Always point back to that and somehow it’s always assumed we’re to the right of the peak despite ample evidence that if the curve does exist, we’re left of the peak. It seems in their mind the peak exists at 0% taxes.

That’s not an exaggeration, I really do think they believe that.

I’m going to offend some good people here by saying this and I apologize for that in advance, but it does not surprise me that the Republican voting bloc here strongly correlates to being religious/Mormon. I grew up in a very religious household and it was always beaten in to us to not question things you don’t understand, just have faith. I can see how a mind shaped to work in that way can still believe in voodoo economics despite decades of evidence to the contrary.

I’m just speaking in general terms, not absolutes. I know we have religious people here in our community who are very smart, bright, and kind people who can separate doctrine from economics and science. No offense intended on my part.

It is increasingly easy to see how this genius managed to lose money running casinos.

Unsure where to put this, but ole Donny boy has pissed off the corn farmers:

On one hand, I say fuck them because I hate ethanol. Any benefit to ethanol is wasted in reduced gas mileage and increased maintenance. On the other hand, I say fuck them because they they thought Donny would do them right. On the third hand, fuck them because edible corn is a tiny fraction of what is grown.

It’s always quite shocking when the Scorpion stings you despite all assurances.
