This is what happens when a Twitch streamer gets "swatted"

A post was split to a new topic: Should politics in videogame discussions be avoided or separated?

We need remotely operated or automated police response units - totally apathetic to race and quite happy to confirm being shot at before returning fire.

They already tried this in Detroit. It didn’t work out.

Well, this guy wasn’t swatted, but this is sort of the Twitch-meets-police thread, and this alleged dipshit got to meet the police for allegedly beating up his girlfriend–while streaming Fortnite–after she suggested he take a break from the game.

“I’ll just commit this crime on stream, where it automatically keeps a record of it.”

He was just creating some unique content on his stream - twitch doesn’t have a dedicated channel for assault yet.

Next up: periscoping a bank robbery.

So disturbing.

I also made the mistake of reading the comments on the Kotaku article and youtube clips. Remind me never to read the comments on a youtube clip of this nature.

You could have just stopped there.

I could have. But then there’s the small percentage of clips with great comments sections pointing out to enriching content.

Well at least there’s proof it happened.

Fucking asswipes still think this shit is funny.

Two individuals got into a heated argument over a UMG Wager online after a loss in the match. During the heated dispute, one of the individuals involved provided the other with a fake address for where he resided. The other individual decided to send the location to a known swatter. This known swatter is reportedly the same individual that called in a fake bomb threat at CWL Dallas event earlier in December. The swatter called in a fake scenario to the local police. Swatting has been a problem within the Call of Duty community.

This is a year old. There are tons of posts about this and the resulting guilty plea and, I think, jail sentence, in this very thread.

Charge both parties involved (the person who provided the address to the swatter and the swatter themselves) with murder. Put the shitstains away for life.

Yea, I got the article mixed up. I’m a fuck up.

20 years.

I am always surprised how light the sentence seems. He pled guilty to over 50 federal charges, and led to the death of an innocent by police. I guess pleading and not having any prior offenses helps a lot?

You can get a 10 year sentence for a second offense of having 1 marijuana plant.

I think these 20 years is going to be a rough time for him. And as a tax payer, I don’t really want to pay for more than that. He’s fucked after he gets out anyway, I imagine.

I hope the others charged with co-conspiracy get nailed as well, they are just as much at fault (the guys that egged him on into making the call).

I feel extra bad for the family of the victim, it sounds like the guys niece was living with them because her Mom (his sister) had died in a car accident, and then this happened, and then earlier this year she killed herself. Just a lot of tragedy for that family, and two of those deaths are likely on this fucking guy.

Back in mid-January, YouTube computer builder Carey Holzman was swatted. I just found out about this, as I haven’t been watching him much lately. Anyway, he was doing a livestream when it happened, and you can watch the result here. I marked it to start when the sirens can first be heard approaching, but for more context, you can back it up 10 or 20 minutes.

My question is this: Did Mr. Holzman handle this correctly? Did the cops handle this correctly?

As I watched (well, mostly listened, as he was on a wireless mic that started to get some static as he went down the block from his house), I was saying, “No, Carey. Don’t. Wrong response.” I’m obviously of the opinion that he handled the responding officers completely wrong, but judging by the comment responses he got, I am in the minority.

He then did a lengthy follow-up video the following day. I thought he may have changed his attitude a bit by then, after a day to cool down. But no, he just doubled down.

I really can’t see where he is coming from here.
I have enjoyed watching his videos, and he always seemed so reasonable and calm, and hearing his comments bewilders me.

That doesn’t mean this sentence is too short, it means the marijuana plant one is way too long.

I didn’t listen for very long, but the cops seemed very reasonable and the victim came across as an asshat. If I had a swat team all up in my face I don’t really know how I would react, but I would hope better than that. The swat team didn’t seem to not believe him, but as they explained they still have to treat it as credible. Which is totally understandable, and he should have just facilitated that as much as possible so they can get out of his hair.
