It’s dumb… They are just trying to scapegoat touchscreens to try and avoid talking about how poorly trained some folks are.
Why don’t they just use WASD like everyone else?
There’s an ongoing disupte on if the mouse should be inverted or not. Taking over the station from ssomeone with the opposite preference has already lead to multiple fatalities.
I get what you’re implying–that it’s possible a knee-jerk reaction rather than a considered response–but in general, I think there are applications where analog type controls are simply better than digital controls. And vice-versa. For this application, I can definitely see how traditional throttle controls could be advantageous for several reasons, and how more technically advanced digital systems might well be counter-productive.
Though training of course is still the main thing. It may well be easier, though, to achieve good, consistent results with more traditional controls. We shall see.

Hyper-advanced Federation touch technology is able to distinguish a fingertip from a leg or an asscheek. I believe it still has difficulty with fingertip vs. male genitalia (another, better left not detailed, Riker incident).
