My slider maxes out at 1.3, which I think corresponds to the resolution mentioned above. I didn’t notice much of a difference, but it seemed to run ok so I left it.

Are you using a usb 2 instead of 3 cable? It should go higher.

It was the recommended Ankler usb 3 cable, but when I do the test it’s only 2.4 GB per sec.

Yeah apparently the encode resolution is automatically set based on the render resolution, but you can override it with the ‘Encode Resolution Width’ option in the Debug Tool. No idea how the automatic setting relates to the native panel res at different render resolutions, but I guess you should be able to see it in the metrics somewhere if you were keen…

Well that just makes things super confusing… :)

On a desktop Oculus HMD like Rift, I was under the impression that a Pixel Density of 1 gives you that ‘1:1 app-to-display pixel ratio at the center of the image’ resolution, in the same way that setting 100% resolution in SteamVR does.

So I guess the 1x Render Resolution is actually the native panel res, and maxing it out (is that 1.7x?) is kind of equivalent to setting a PD of 1? Does it not use the PD at all with Link? If it does, how do they interact?

That Twitter thread is interesting in that John Carmack shows up and advises against maxing it out lol. :)

I have always argued against people trying to max out the central area at the expense of rendering several times more pixels (and adding aliasing!) away from the center. Every dropped frame from insufficient fill questions your choices.

Unless you have the beefiest of GPUs or the lightest of apps, that resolution will probably be missing frames, which isn’t a great trade for VR in most cases, but you have the option.

Kindf of like our discussion earlier about running G2 at 50%. :)

The bolded part is key. It’s relative. How big or small is the sweet spot? It’s hard to quantify, of course. I’d say the sweet spot of the Quest 2 is decently big, and it doesn’t lose a ton of clarity outside of it.

I read reports of reddit that the quality of the lenses can vary, so I don’t know of you have one with good lenses or not.

About things you can do, you can increase the resolution of the game in SteamVR to increase the clarity.

I tried it, but it can’t deal with my thick Dutch accent.

For simple thing it worked (gears, flaps) but the more complex things like “wingman, engage bandits” never worked satisfactorily.

I just got a Logitech G920 steering wheel and pedals the other day. Yesterday I spent hours playing Dirt 2 with the Quest 2. Holy crap that was immersive. Any suggestions on other driving games in VR? I have American Truck Simmulator, just have to get it installed and tested.

Euro truck simulator and GTAV - I play the latter just to drive around the city in a variety of vehicles. The size and “aliveness” of the city add to the VR immersion. I completely ignore the missions.

Finally got MS Flight Sim running in VR. Wow it’s so amazing! Just wish I could the instrument panel and stuff like that to be less blurry. Really struggling with that kind of thing across the board.

Project Cars 3 is pretty much the best VR driving game, if you’re looking for more game than sim.

GTA V has VR?

With this mod it does:

I have yet to try it out, but I aim to soon.

Instrument panel should be sharp as heck with the G2, @jpinard. You may have turned down settings too much with all the performance tips.

  1. Set OpenXR Dev Tools back up to 100%
  2. Set VR Render Scaling in MSFS back to 100
  3. Make sure you’ve adjusted your IPD slider on the bottom of the G2

See if that gets you the full sharpness. If so, then back off each setting 10% at a time till you find the happy medium between clarity and performance.

And make sure you have the Latest Preview OpenXR Runtime selected in the Dev Tools app.

As Penny mentioned, yes - it does via a mod. Bit of setup configuration but totally worth it.

Holy shit you guys. I just plugged a Quest 2 into my PC to play Star Wars Squadrons, and it was glorious. Someday I’ll get into some actual sims (got Il-2 and DCS F/A 18 queued up), but for now just pew-pewing in a Tie Interceptor is all I need.

At some point, I’ll figure out how to make Squadrons a little sharper, but everything ran great on whatever the default settings were. Really excited to play with this some more.

Awesome! Definitely one of my favorite experiences (VR or otherwise)! I remarked to some friends of mine that “this is the Star Wars experience I’ve been waiting for for 30 years”. Akin to the first time I loaded the original x-wing.

I’ll do that. I’m starting to wonder if part of the problem is my eyes just being a bit too far from the lenses to focus well.

Hence my suggestion of WidmoVR prescription lenses. Get an optician to write a prescription for 6 foot. Use that to order widmo’s. Be awed by superb clarity (in the very middle of the FoV).
