VR - Is it really going to be a success? Or, thanks Time for starting a discussion!

Thanks. Yeah I will wait for a sale on that one. I didnt really like Fallout 4 anyway tbh so I doubt VR is gonna help that.

I’m dying to try out FO4 VR but a) not at that price! and b) when Bethesda adds some official Rift compatibility.

Whoa it doesn’t support the Rift? K, well thats an easy pass forever then :)

I think fixes will be possible so that the controls will be 99% on par with the vive controllers. I’d say it’s 75% there right now. Fallout 4 really is the VR killer app for me – competent shooter, base building, simulation lite, and most importantly – a moddable open world, we won’t see anything like this developed specifically for VR anytime soon.

The price is a bit too high. They should have at least offered a discount for existing owners.

This seems like a good package. Good thing I forgot to buy Talos Principle when it was on sale earlier.

Is the menu based UI not an issue for you? Some people have said it’s a bit painful to choose options from a menu instead of performing the action directly.

Yeah, it’s not ideal, but I love the promise of FO4VR enough that it doesn’t bother me.

(Note: I haven’t actually played much, I’ve put it to the side in anticipation of a hardware upgrade.)

I think From Other Suns might be the next thing I pick up. First person VR FTL?

I like that. Thanks for the heads up.

I read it’s not so good in single player, something about difficulty being balanced around the co-op?

Please let us know!

Onward is supposed to be a really good shooter - I picked it up but haven’t tried it out yet.

Magic Leap finally provided a glimpse at their thing…

So it seems no one is buying games?

Probably would have helped sales if any of those titles (Fallout/LA Noire/DOOM) didn’t exclude half of the VR player base at launch.

Yeah, they’ve not done themselves any favors. Fuck Zenimax and the childish way they operate. Also - 60 bucks for Fallout 4 VR? Gooooooooo fuck yourself!

Fallout VR is a new kind of thing… and presumably they want to see if anyone would pay $60 for it. Seems like that price might well fall like all Bethesda titles soon enough. It is a shame they didn’t have a discount for existing owners. That seems like a bit of a slap to exactly the people who would have been interested.

It’s a tough market, for sure. VR is and will likely remain a niche product. It wouldn’t surprise me if the #1 use for VR is porn.

I don’t necessarily blame Zenimax or Rockstar for inking deals with HTC. They looked at sales forecasts and decided a partnership would bring in the most moola for the effort. Oculus isn’t helping matters either, with their exclusive storefront.

My fear is the only profitable sector will be on consoles, and the PC VR market will suffer. I hear Skyrim VR is amazing on the PSVR, despite the lower resolution and crappy controllers. That’s because “it just works”.

I’m still happy with Elite Dangerous. That’s all I need.

As of now the profitability for VR is in arcade experiences (as in amusement park style ride, not arcade-style games). Those make money.

Console VR probably does not lose as much as high end PC, but basically there are not enough VR users to be able to sustain PC or console game development yet (and adoption has slowed a lot).

This has been going on for a while, at least 6 months ago most VR developers advice was to not get into it. People are finishing project and closing studios fast, or switching to traditional platforms.

I still think Magic Leap and other devices might see a faster growth and I remain optimistic on AR, but VR will have a hard time coming on it’s own before AR is adopted, at the current rate at least.

I can’t imagine many people expect to make money on VR at this stage (least of all Facebook). I could see people just starting to try stuff out and learn what works. Fingers crossed for another hardware generation.

Fallout 4 VR is a slapdash port even for its targeted SKU, Bethsoft doesn’t deserve success but I hope they get it anyway. I haven’t heard of anything else ambitious for VR on the horizon.
