What is your current favorite Roguelike? [Or all things roguelike]

Can you add some links to where I can find the files?

Elona+ 1.92.

Custom 1.90.47

I don’t know if Elona needs to be installed first before the others.

Thanks buddy

It does not.

Also, for new players, this is an incredibly helpful site:

I put a couple hours in Tangledeep which is like “Babies first roguelike”

It definitely feels directly inspired by the Japanese roguelike Shiren the Wander although there are multiple classes(and you can multiclass) and it has a Diablo-esque TP system to return to town whenever you want. This can be cheesed because there is a healer in town that can restore all your “meters” for a fee.

Difficulty wise it is pretty tame. I beat the first boss on my first try, which never happens in a roguelike.

What a truly excellent sandbox game. I’m glad that the plus and custom development picked back up after a slump. Now post your alias.

I had no idea they existed. I can’t remember the last time I touched Elona but I look forward to jumping back in for sure.

Well, as you can see below, my alias is ‘Killer Sword’. I figured it was about the best I could do for a warrior. All the NPCs make fun of it though. :)

Yeah, I thought the same. You can increase the difficulty, the thing is, it’s kind of hidden in some advanced starting options whose menu isn’t immediately clear.

I continue to be amazed by Elona. There’s so many layers of stuff to do in this game it’s not funny.

I got caught up for a while playing blackjack in the casino for loots. I also found a few treasure maps in dungeons so I had to track down the spots marked on the maps and dig them up. I finally got around to picking a god to worship (Opatos of Earth) so I’ve been trying to raise favor with him to get the nice benefits. My main problem is I pick something to do but then I get distracted by something else.

I was able to capture a Silver/Platina Bell as a pet. This thing is incredibly fast. I gave it a machine gun and really good bullet ammo and it kills everything before I (or my other pets) can even get to them. He gets 5 or 6 attacks for my 1. This is great but is actually a bit of a problem because he’s hogging all the XP. I may have to sit him down for a bit to let my other pets (and myself) get some levels. First though I want to try to gene engineer him to have some hand slots so I can give him some rings to wear. I have a ring that resists poison and poison is maybe his biggest weakness because of his extremely low HP.

I’d love to play Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, but I generally just avoid games without win states.

Has anyone tried it? It is supposed to be amazing if you like aimless/choose your own fun type of games.

It’s @Vormithrax’s day job.

Brand new players in Cataclysm: DDA don’t need to worry about win states for quite awhile. The win state in your first game is ‘Survive 1 hour’. Then you move to ‘1 day’, 1 ‘week’ etc. Eventually you will ‘git gud’ enough to stay alive for extended times but that is likely going to be MONTHS of game-play later. There is no true ‘i win’ mission with a victory video or score system but that’s the nature of the Cataclysm, no one survives.

I do very difficult challenge runs where i create my own win state for each run and have scores of examples on my YouTube channel (i explain the theme/win-state right at the start of each run if anyone is looking for ideas). The game is absolutely HUGE in content and allows for a wide variety of goals to attempt which is what keeps me interested. In addition the game gets half a dozen ‘updates’ daily and evolves very fast with refinements to the mechanics, added buildings/monsters/items, etc.

It’s very much one of those games with a daunting initial learning cliff (which is why i started my YouTube channel helping new players with tutorials), but the time spent is well worth it for the amount of game-play you get for a whopping total of $0 bucks.

There is actually a pretty great thread on this game here already:

I looked into it based on info/videos posted in here and was really into trying it out for myself at one point, but I don’t remember if I ever had the nerve.

I periodically download Cataclysm just to port over my settings and see if everything still works.

But every time I see the way people play in screenshots and videos my mind boggles. It has some of the ugliest and cluttered tilesets. It looks immensely cleaner and readable with decent ASCII, now that it properly support a square tileset and text uses its own system.

Cogmind beta 9 is out, with lengthy changelog!

Damn, I should reinstall Cogmind.

Ok peoples, what would you recommend as a good starter or gateway roguelike? I’ve played a few here and there but nothing has really stuck with me. I need something for a player who doesn’t have ninja-like reflexes. And that has decent graphics (I’m not a fan of the pixel graphics trend but I won’t rule something out just because it’s pixelly).
