Why are there default Russian links and extensions when I install Chrome????

I am using Firefox Quantum and happy with it, but can’t use an app (Dishanywhere, which lets me watch TV from my Dish Hopper 3 when I’m on the road - they say it only works on the PC with Chrome right now.) OK, I can install Chrome on this laptop for this one app, I used Chrome for years (though never on this notebook.)

So I install Chrome from the Google Chrome website, but I immediately see that there are two Russian website links in my bookmarks bar, and two Russian extensions. What the heck? Is this normal for Chrome these days?

Nope, you’re probably infected with something or other.

Hmmm. Only see these when I install Chrome, and this is a pretty new Thinkpad X1 Carbon that I’ve never run Chrome on. I run Windows Defender, nothing there - any suggestion for something to run to check this out?

Give malwarebytes a shot.

Ran MWB, I’m always hesitant at how aggressive it is in IDing PUPs that look legit but I just let it quarantine all of what it IDed. Appeared to work, Chrome looks “normal” on this install.

Good news!
