Would installing the old Directplay negatively affect performance?

I have an older Close Combat game I’d like to install, but am a bit concerned installing an outdated service.

Don’t see why it would (though keeping the old ones patched is a nuisance). But there is some backwards compatibility of versions, so make sure you don’t go farther back than you need and do make sure that you patch whatever you install.
