Assassin's Creed Syndicate - Formerly 'Victory'

Yeah he was making a speech, it was surprisingly easy if you were able to escort the bad guys out of the area in just the right order.

The cargo hijacking/protecting missions help keep things spontaneous. One minute you are heading to a spot to trigger a mission and the next you find yourself jumping on a cargo wagon and wrecking everything in your path.

Is it actually worth it though, because it will take 10 hours to recoup my 10K investment (20 cycles of 30 minutes)? I may be done with the game at that point.

I think I’ve only done the first one, I’ll have to get to the rest. One of my favorite things about the game is seeing the people from history - even if the situations aren’t historical.

I’ll have to try at least one of them. That’s one of the few side activities I didn’t try at least one time.

Maybe. :p

I played like 44 hours or so, it paid of for me.

i just took over all of london. guess i now have some story stuff to do. marx first 😁

I’m far from finished yet, but I find the Dickens mission a bit loose. Do they tie up later?
I did the one where you investigate robberies with people that have been hypnotized, and you find the hypnotizer in the Park.

Later, I’m walking through the park, and that guy is still standing there with his top hat, and he’s marked red. As I walk up to him, he kills a civilian, so I walk past him and Assassinate him, only to get the “Assassins didn’t kill civilians”.

Stupid.

Also had to restart a main mission a few times because they became buggy and didn’t let me identify opportunities.

Other than that, Juat in comparison to Origins - aren’t the graphics of the people actually slightly better in Syndicate?

I’ve finished the main story line now, but not much else of the others. I plan on going back to Darwin for sure due to Kristina’s recommendation, but maybe also some of the others. I tried to take the approach with this game that I did with Skyrim - play it for the game that it is and not the one I wish it was. If I had to slap a number on a review, I’d call it a 6. I’m not unhappy I spent time with it and was entertained throughout much of it. My enjoyment came from mainly 3 things - the story, the historical characters, and the beauty of the environment. I guess there is a 4th - while repetitive I did have fun being an assassin badass.

The main strength is definitely the local itself. So much detail goes into the look of the entire city, but it does follow the much of the same philosophy as the game itself. It’s a veneer of detail, like a movie set. Aside from actual missions, there isn’t anything of any substance tucked away anywhere. Other than repetitive tasks, there isn’t anything to interact with.

Another strength is running into historical figures throughout the missions. It’s just kinda cool. I also enjoyed most of the story and characters (other than the bit of modern day stuff).

There was definitely fun to be had creeping around and killing the badguys. Or, just running through the streets to my target location and taking out the criminals who started to threaten me. “Hey you’ll be sorry I’m coming over there.”. Really? Don’t bother. Stay there and I’ll slit your throat on the way by. Done. It could also be fun scouting the areas and trying to get in without making a scene - tryinig not to kill the innocent policemen.

Movement could be cludgy, hopping up on things when I didn’t want to, or when I just wanted to drop down.

The game also contains a lot of gadgets and systems that the player doesn’t really need to use. Kind of that veneer of detail again. 90% of the time I could just creep in and kill people, or even just run in and kill people. You don’t really need the smoke bombs or stun grenades in many places. Knives can come in pretty useful, along with guns. There is a ton of gang upgrades that I never bothered with because it just isn’t necessary. Combat is too easy and simple to really need to play tactically or take too much care. You can get outnumbered at times.

Many times the extra objectives were more of an annoyance because I’d fail them due to something I couldn’t for see.

While not difficult, the last battle had to be one of the most annoying in recent memory. Uggg. There was nothing good about that one.

So yeah, I have a lot of negatives with this game and the Assassin’s Creed series as a whole. It seems like it could be so much more than Ubisoft is willing to put into it. If they gave it some more depth it could be really good. Or if they tuned the combat so the player needed to take a bit more care. I got 18 decent hours from it by not doing many extraneous things and I think I kept my enjoyment up do to that. I don’t regret the purchase or time with it at all, but it could be so much more.

That’s exactly how I feel. They build this really cool framework and these carefully realized worlds and they just want you to sneak up and stab people. This could be so much more.

Me three. I put about 6 hours into this and just couldn’t take it anymore and uninstalled. I hated the characters, the environment, the historical figures’ appearances, the repetitive gameplay. In fact, it took Origins from a “must purchase” to a “nope” for me. I wish I had followed my first impression and just skipped it.

I think the Darwin part I was referring to turned out to be the main quest, where you go to the asylum. I really enjoyed that part.

This is a good review. I’m 56% in to the game now, so I still have a lot to do, so I’ll come back to my final thoughts, but what I find is important here (as it probably is with many other AC games) is to mix up the liberation missions with the main story. I really want to do what many others have done - to just clear the map of Blighters as soon as possible and then do the main missions, but I quickly realized that would make me bored with the game a lot sooner. I enjoy clearing out Templar strongholds and child liberation missions, but those together with bounty hunts for several hours would soon become tiring. The main missions add the extra cooless to the games, I really enjoy the unique assassinations.

So, well, that’s my recipe for the time being.

Wait, what? You hated the ENVIRONMENT? It’s stunning! =(

Lol, I hear you, but it IS Assassins Creed… I think one of the main reasons I enjoy their games, even when they lack more interesting stuff, is just that - that I’m supposed to be sneaking up and stabbing people from behind / above / below. I enjoy that. A lot.

yup. i dont expect much from an AC game but stabbin and sneakin and some rollicking easy fisticuffs. also beautiful and interesting environments to do it in.

imo jacob and evie are almost as good as ezio was.

its all taste and opinion of course.

Oh, and have you ever done a Bounty Hunt for a real long time, slowly killing off everyone around your target without ever being detected, kidnapping your target and walking incredibly slow up to a coach, order a wagon of Rooks to escort you and the second you get to the drop off zone, you get a blue screen and the message “an error has occured” on you PS4 and then you are kicked back to do it all from the beginning so then you just kill yourself instead? :):):)))))))

Good times.

Stupid consoles.

I appreciate the artistry but have no love for the color palates or general appearance. It’s all so foggy and grey and brown and dull. I guess that era in London just isn’t my thing.

Off topic, but I always figured Victorian London has to at least look way better than more contemporary London, which was essentially rebuilt after the Blitz. I visited 3 times during the 80s, and London has got to be the most boring looking Metropolis in the world. Of course that might have changed during the last 3 decades. I see images of London now with some more interesting modern architecture.

Of course, one problem with even exploring beautiful cities in Assassin’s Creed games is that you’re so often seeing a Roof’s eye view of the city. I love Paris in real life, it’s my favorite city, followed by San Francisco. But Paris is gorgeous at street level, but when you get a view from the top of Notre Dame, or from the Eiffel Tower, or from Sacre Coeur, all you see are these ugly rooftops. I haven’t played Assassin’s Creed Unity yet, but man, rooftops are the one really ugly part of Paris. I didn’t pay much attention to London rooftops, but I suspect I might feel the same about them.

Right, real London is horrible. Assassin London did have different areas with different atmospheres.

I think I can safely say rooftop Paris looks pretty ok in Unity though :) In London they actually introduce the slidey grappling thing, which makes the experience a little different as you spend a lot of time hanging above streets.
