[INDENT][INDENT][INDENT][INDENT][INDENT]December 16th, 1916, a group of conspirators (Prince Felix Yusupov, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and Vladimir Purishkevich) figured that 47-year-old Rasputin had bit too much unwarranted power and decided to do something about it. The plan was to tempt the heavily licentious Rasputin into visiting Yusupov’s palace with promises of “entertainment” by beautiful Yusupov’s wife, Irina. He would arrive to the palace in secret, be fed poisoned cakes and wine, have his dead body rolled up in a rug, and then dumped Malaya Nevka river.
It didn’t quite hold that way. Somehow, Rasputin’s body was able to withstand enough cyanide laced cake and wine that would have been able to kill five men. Feeling antsy that Rasputin might somehow live to see the morning, Yusupov grabbed a gun and shot Rasputin whilst his back was turned. The shut appeared to be fatal. The conspirators retreated upstairs to celebrated the Mad Monk’s death.
Roughly an hour later (perhaps he left his coat, perhaps he just felt the inexplicable need to see Rasputin’s dead body in more time) Yusupov returned downstairs and noticed that the body was still warm.
Like something out of a horror film, Rasputin ascended to full height and went to attack Yusupov. Purishkevich went to Yusupov’s aide and shot Rasputin roughly three or four times. He still lived, struggling on the ground.
The three conspirators clubbed him out of consciousness, may or may not have severed his penis (you can look that part up on your own), wrapped him up in a rug, and finally tossed him into the river.
Three days later his desecrated body was found, and an autopsy was performed. It was not the poison, gun wounds, or severe beating that did him in. Water had been found in his lungs—he had drowned.
