Dark Souls for whimps (like me): Lords of the Fallen

Is there someone who can explain to me how to use things like the fire or energy shards? Do you have to go to your inventory while in the fight to use them or do you equip them in some way?

Sorry, I’ve forgotten. It’s been two years!

Yea, I am a little late to the game.

Don’t give up though! There were a couple of early bosses in this one that made the game seem really hard. But once you get past them, your character’s power curve is amazing. You’ll be more powerful than anything else very soon, and then the game changes into almost a power fantasy. I enjoyed that.

You can give up if you want to save time though. It’s not a spectacular game. Merely decent.

I mean, yeah, I suppose, given the perfectly valid philosophy that there’s not enough time in the world to play even the excellent games, let alone dip into the decent games, but in this case Scuzz is a fan of this type of game, so that’s gotta count for something and be an overriding factor over that philosophy. I mean, surely for some genres it’s worth it for fans of that genre to dip into the decent games too.

It’s a less limited genre than it appears at first blush: you can trace it back through Severance, Gothic and King’s Field/Shadow Tower (and to some extent From’s other, more neglected melee combat games, Otogi and Ninja Blade,) and from there all the way back to Ultima Underworld. Once you’re in that ballpark, there’s no shortage of tough-as-nails RPGs. I’ve played a lot of mediocre games in my life—certainly more than the list I just gave—but it’s almost a fetish for me to play something like Viking: Battle for Asgard or the odd hidden object game.
I’m not really sure what the point I’m driving here is but I heard enough negative about Lords of the Fallen to avoid it.

Lords of the Fallen isn’t in the same league as Dark Souls, but I found it very worth playing. I liked it enough where it is still in the ‘to play’ list to try another class. I enjoyed it much more than the newer ‘The Surge’ too.

I do want to like it, and there is some good stuff in it. I will admit to be expecting it to be easier based on the reviews. Bad guys with shields are a real pain in the ass in this game, and the lighting is a little dark. Imagine fighting the Lost Sinner in DS2 in the dark (as you can) and being unable to tell where her front and back are.

It took some time to figure out the mechanics, but I am now happy with my weapon and swing speed. I just haven’t figured out how to use some items I have been given.

The boss I am stuck on (and I have died to it three times when it had virtually no health left) is just frustrating as hell for a couple reasons. But, the world is interesting. I like having a plot of some kind and the runes mechanic is interesting. I also like the gauntlet as I normally carry a bow.

Yeah, I had similar sentiments towards the game. I wasn’t over the moon over it like with Dark Souls, but there were aspects that I enjoyed. Including the part you haven’t gotten to yet, which is being overpowered. I liked that aspect a lot, it gave me a real kick. It’s not something you ever experience in the Souls games.

I’m not sure if the game being too dark is normal though. Maybe you need to adjust the brightness/gamma? At least the Xbox version I played wasn’t all that dark at any point that I can remember.

Wow, playing with the “gamma” made all the difference. The boss is down. I also figured out how to use the other shard inventory items.

Thanks @Rock8man for the suggestion. A great example of why gaming forums are the true boss.

I was just about to chime in that I never had brightness issues with LotF so I’m glad you sorted it out.

And as @Rock8man says, the feeling of being overpowered later in the campaign really does wonders for overall enjoyment. Nothing like making a running attack with a heavy two-handed and straight up oneshotting most of the regular nooks, or obliterating the bosses in seconds.

The Champion is kicking my ass now. I think a great deal of my problems with this game is that I kep trying to fight Dark Souls style, rolling and slashing, and basically this character just isn’t built that. There is no quick roll, no matter how light I am. It is very hard to simply avoid being hit.

I beat the Champion and for the first time felt like I had beat a Dark Souls boss. I just had to re-think my build and my pre-fight planning. I went lighter and got a roll which made this fight much easier, all while using a bigger weapon and spamming Rage, a neat little extra I experimented with.

Looks like the 2nd game will not be out for awhile.

This game is turning into another Dead Island 2.

I posted this elsewhere and probably should have posted it here. So here it is…

So I finished Lords of the Fallen this afternoon. I did enjoy the game, but it has it’s ups and downs. The final boss was annoying as hell with his healing and jumping around and draining your health bar. But he finally went down after I watched a few videos for help and got some good ideas.

I do think the games re-usable rune/crafting system was nice. Made for good weapon and armor experimentation. Overall the bosses were fun and while some were pretty easy others (at least for me) took several tries or a complete change of strategy.

And while I keep seeing it compared to Dark Souls, it is no Dark souls. But a good game in it’s own right.

What class did you finish the game as?

I remember trying all 3 in this game, and Warrior was the easiest early on, Rogue was the hardest. And then Cleric had this crossover point where the healing spell made the Cleric the most powerful, so I finished the rest of the game as the Cleric.

I got pretty far as the Warrior too, before I switched full time to the Cleric, but Rogue was too hard for me.

I played as a warrior. I started with heavy armor and a light weight axe. But after a few bosses realized that I was better with light weight armor and a good sword. With the final boss I went with a heavy axe because you need to do big damage quickly.

The rune system and the different armors made it pretty easy to go light, and at least two options helped with encumbrance so it didn’t take long before you could roll in some very good light armor.

For the warrior the Rage option was almost overpowered. From what I saw the Cleric had some pretty overpowered options as well. Rogue had some good equipment in the second half of the game but I would never have had the patience to last that long.

One big negative for this game was how often it crashed on my system. My PC runs things pretty well and this game probably crashed a few times with every playing. Reading the Steam discussions and in other places apparently this is standard with the game. Someone not as patient as me would have quit playing this game because of it.
