If you add crew points to Command, you can upgrade your ship. You start a new game with a small Escort ship. Add 5 points to Command and your ship upgrades to a Corvette with a new larger model. 6? more points gets you a Frigate, then a Destroyer is next, etc. Most provide more component slots and each has a different ship model.
Each time you upgrade your ship is heavier requiring more thrust to achieve the same speed, so you’ll want plenty of thrust before upgrading.
Is there a downside to identifying stuff? Is there a cost?
Just the time. At a vendor, you can “Identify All” for a small fee.
And as has been mentioned, time is a very important resource to manage at higher difficulties.

It’s my understanding that Steven Peeler will be starting the dialog with Valve to get Drox Operative on Steam next week. Whether it gets on Steam right away will be up to Valve. Soldak plans to get the game on Steam as soon as possible.

I’ve admired Soldak’s games without ever actually buying or playing one beyond a demo. I’m pretty darn sure this one will convert me.

Version 0.929 is out: patches and changes. This patch adds Bounty Hunters, fixes some higher level quests not showing up correctly, and as usual fixes a bunch of small things.
Also for those that haven’t been playing, we posted the last two races: Shadow and Human.

Now wait, who hires these bounty hunters? Factions who don’t like you, for example, or do they just show up?
Factions that are at war with you, can send bounty hunters after you.

Those bounty hunters tend to be serious business- When they can almost one-shot a dryad ship, they probably can one-shot folks.
That said, the current patch has some clear performance issues on one of my laptops, I wouldn’t recommend throwing away the old patch if you patch up just yet.
