Dungeon Encounters - With Mistress Square Enix

If I’m making good progress with my party, is there any incentive to swap out members before someone dies?

Nothing like stripping an old friend and leaving them naked in the middle of an hostile place, to make room for the new chance encounter that just happened!

I mean, who among us hasn’t been on that date before, right?

Short answer: Yes, more or less.
Long answer: You find party abilities, some of which are basically spells and can be cast only in combat. I’ve found a heal ability and a resurrect ability. They have limited uses, but can be recharged at any “adventurer’s rest” tile.

The main way to heal is to find a 06 spot. There are usually a couple per area, at least.

Ah yeah I actually have one of those and totally forgot - have yet to even use it!

are the 06 always heal, also when starting a new game? Would be interesting if they shuffle numbers (or maybe bad design).

Nothing is random, but the placement of enemies each time you enter a level.
Even the number of them and their type is determined.

Any tips on party members to use? It’s cumbersome to try to compare them, and they all seem to be mostly what you make of them with equipment, but do any of them have particularly advantageous base stats?

I made sure to take the one that has the accessory that boosts combat damage. That allows her to better use the ‘random’ damage items/spells, since then they’ll have a minimum damage of 20, rather than 0!

I thought damage boosts on random attacks only boosted the damage ceiling, not the floor too. But maybe it’s different for the accessory you’re talking about.

Well maybe that’s true, I don’t know for sure. The description just said it 'increases damage dealt to enemies`, and I never saw damage go under 20 on that character.

In that case, ignore my advice! Because random damage items suck otherwise (early on at least).

I pretty much grabbed the first four available and have been doing fine.

Yeah, apart from that one that was (mistakenly) due to the item, I just picked based on looks. And chose my visible lead the same way.

One odd thing - given how low-fi the game is, it’s a bit weird they went and fully 3d modelled every character!

chuckles in the back of the room.

Well, nothing ominous about that.

He delights in it… :)

There doesn’t seem to be much difference between the characters. However some items can only be equipped by certain ones. I took some samurai type I found wandering so he could equip a katana for example.

When rescuing wanderers I recommend escorting them back to the home base. If you get a full party wipe you need to rescue them and you can only take characters who are home. If you have no-one left at home then it’s game over and it will revert you back to a previous save where you did have someone available.

Down to about level 38 still having a good time!

Just started this and it’s kind of a relaxing minimalist dungeon crawl that I am enjoying quite a bit. Of course, I HAVE to explore every tile on each level which is probably best for leveling between floors. I thought this looked way too basic but it’s keeping me entertained between FC6 operations.

Does auto advance work? Is it supposed to let your party explore without you pushing the party around yourself? I am on the PS5 and holding O while walking doesn’t do anything. Can’t get it to work.

Also no mini map or way to zoom out to find the tiles you have not explored?

You press a direction with the button pressed, and you’ll be walking to the next intersection or encounter automatically while the button is being pressed. Pacman movement scheme, if you wish.
The game does a fine job with its pathfinding pressing simple directions, I was using this mainly when navigating zones I had already explored or when scared to jump into an encounter.
It has other advantages and drawbacks but that’d be spoiler territory.

No mini map, but there will be a way to help you find unexplored tiles (if you’re not thorough on your first exploration, you should be thorough on your first exploration!) later on.
