Ferrari - Michael Mann, Adam Driver, lots of red cars

So this is a prequel to Ford vs. Ferrari in the Motor Citematic Universe?

This trailer looks like someone tried to make a parody of an automotive drama.

Every time Adam Driver is on screen in the trailer, I’m expecting to hear the SNL crowd laugh.

Well, we need to get the Ferrari origin story, how he got his first supersuit, etc.

Adam Driver? Lazy casting.

This is House of Gucci if Adam Driver hadn’t become obsessed with that stupid bicycle that got him shot.

They were on Cruz control.

Did nobody else really go see this?

I thought it was better than expected from the below average reviews; strong characters and gorgeous period sets and racing VFX. It’s a bit aimless, like most biopics are, so you just need to go with the flow rather than expect any kind of strong resolution.

Not many people apparently.

I went to see this with some other fans of racing, and we all very much enjoyed it. Both the drama and the racing was good. Example: These 50s cars had low grip narrow tires. They had huge slip angles resulting in large 4 wheel drifts relative to modern cars. The racing scenes, especially at the Ferrari test track, showed these drifts.

Better than Grand Turismo by alot (and I though GT was pretty good).

Didn’t care too much for this, sadly. I never got really invested into the story and its characters. Some of the racing scenes looked nice, sure, but there’s also bits like the car/ragdoll physics in the crash scene looking comical.

While it wasn’t as bad as Guy Pearce in Prometheus, I still had to put in a bit of extra effort to not see Adam Driver. Casting an older actor would have been a better choice IMO. Also not big fan of the decision to have everyone don an Italian accent. Wouldn’t have thought too much about it 20 years ago, but I’ve kinda outgrown it at this point. The likes of Chernobyl or Death to Stalin didn’t feel any less immersive or legit because the actors involved didn’t garnish their delivery with a Russian accent.

I think when I watch a movie like this my rating ssystem works like this

Racing >> Cars >> Everything else

With that in mind, my car racing movie list is

Le Mans
Rush
Ford vs Ferrari
Grand Prix
Ferrari
Talledega Nights
Cars (all)
The Love Bug (Herbie!)
.
.
.
Days of Thunder (blech!)

Need to watch: Snake and Mongoose

Note: I excluded documentaries

No love for Bobby Deerfield? It might be dated, but if you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a classic racing movie for a reason: Sydney Pollack and Al Pacino in their prime!

And if you want to populate the bottom of you list a bit more, don’t forget Renny Harlin’s Driven, which I seem to recall has a dopey chase scene where Stallone takes an F1 onto the city streets. Whee!

I’ve never heard of Bobby Deerfield, despite being a serious racer/car guy. Wow… I’ll have to see if its available anywhere. Boy reviews look pretty mixed.

I kinda skipped Driven for the same reasons I skipped Speed Racer

I know it’s a weird thing but the thing that bothers me most about the first Cars is that they used a cover of Life is a Highway instead of the original song. It’s a nice cover, there’s nothing wrong with it, but whenever I watch that movie, I always feel this strong urge to listen to the original right away.

I should warn you I haven’t seen it in decades. Despite being a classic racing movie, it might actually stink. There was, uh, a lot going on in 1977 in terms of movie releases. : )

Cannonball Run
Cannonball Run II

Wait… what? Don’t skip Speed Racer. Speed Racer is absolutely 100% the anime in film form with real people. It’s a brilliant film and the most misunderstood big budget movie of all time IMO.

I think that’s the issue. It sounds like @eliandi is looking for racing/car porn in a more realistic setting.

Ideally you want to avoid too much Emile Hirsch, as well. I find it difficult to tolerate any amount larger than Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
