Help Choosing a Pre-built Gaming PC Please

That Falcon website made my brain bleed.

Buy a dell or dell XPS, and upgrade ram and video cards.

So I had to tweak Loyd’s list a bit since the case he suggested didn’t take optical drives (I still need one shuddup), so I have this if I went with the high-end (currently) graphics card:

I also chose a lower-powered graphics card for the same build at Misguided’s suggestion:

I also went through their parts list to find what was highly rated and came up with this:

I also tweaked the above build with a mix of SSD and platter drives, which are cheaper overall:

I’m not sure how I feel about solely a solid state drive. It’s expensive, but it’s probably awesome.

If it were me, I’d consider a 1060 for now. I have a 1070, which is what I’d recommend for 1440p, but 1060 is the price/performance sweet spot for 1080p gaming. That saves you 100 bucks more to use on an 1100 later. UNLESS you think you might upgrade the monitor first. Then get the 1070 (otherwise you’d want to upgrade them together).

Nah, monitor is great, I see no reason to replace it until it dies. ;)

So like this?

Geez, a 1060 is $310 compared to a 1070 at $380? That’s disappointing. I’d have thought a GTX 1060 would be a lot cheaper.

That’s the problem with buying right now, because of the inflated mining prices and 11 series on horizon.

How about this one for 30 bucks less?

I’d suck it up and keep using the GTX770 for a month until the 1180 is out.

At least you know the old card won’t be CPU limited. :D

I’m going back and forth on this very thing. My PC works, though with far less HD space now, so I COULD limp along for a spell.

But new. Shiny. Toy.

Go through the motions of building a couple PCs.

The go look at your monthly budget. Slap yourself for thinking about it and set it aside.

Remember about it two months later and then buy something when the new cards are out and pat yourself on the back for waiting.

Indeed. Are the coin-miners still disrupting the supply?

EDIT: going with 6gb instead of 3gb pushes them from around 250 to around 320.

Waiting would certainly be ideal.

I get it. Once you start down the path to the dark side, it’s tough to stop. When I built my rig…6? Years ago, I spent a couple of weeks picking out parts.

You owe us a build thread at this point. You realize that, right?

I’m not building it myself this time. I’m gonna either find a company that will build it, or a local shop that I can pay to build it once I buy the parts. I’m done with that nonsense.

This discussion on upgrading / video cards has me thinking. Maybe I could go for the PC upgrade CPU and MB, and transfer over my GTX 960 for a few months. Then buy the 1170 for a wicked jump in speed. Thus spreading my bills a bit longer and making my purchases seem slightly more rational to my S.O. Plan?

That sounds reasonable if you plan to keep your other components like the case, PSU and what not.

@BrianRubin have you used Windows 10 at all?

Also , you probably don’t even know what UEFI is!

@Scott123 even if you do keep your case, get a new more efficient PSU.

Nope, still using Windows 7.

GO UEFI YOURSELF no I don’t know what it means…

:D

UEFI started replacing BIOS a few years ago. Its like a billion times easier to use / tweak stuff. My 2017 build’s mobo came with UEFI.

I’d recommend then the first thing you install on your new pc , to be Classic Shell.
