Mafia 3 - More RICO antics

I can tell I’m going to have a love hate with this game.

Love: The story so far (just got to the scene where Donovan shows up by my bed,) the way it’s told, the characters, and oh wow the music. The music they were playing as Lincoln is waking up, they’re showing the looting and RFK’s assassination, etc. was perfect and epic.

Hate: Having to restart from the beginning when I die. When Lincoln was the diversion while the guys got to the getaway car, surrounded by police, there’s no way I could have gotten through that without multiple trial and error runs. Which is no fun, just frustrating.

Yeah, that sequence was the hardest part of the game, I found. It took me a few attempts. It’s a shame because it’s also one of the very few points that they do something special with the gameworld (Mardi Gras in this case).

@JeffL you got the church scene yet? that was so fucking impressive. its rare even for movies to manage such emotional impact.

With the scenes of RFK’s assassination, etc? Yeah, and the music was perfect.

I’m just now past talking to Cassandra and at this point I’m really loving the game, in spite of the checkpoint save method. I still am learning things since there’s no documentation, like what the little green circles with an up triangle mean, but it’s pulled me in.

OK, loving it more. Finished taking over the bordello and giving the biz to Cassandra, things are opening up, and having fun. I like that I was told I needed to sneak in and release the top escorts, but I chose to go in blasting those rednecks and wasn’t punished for doing it my way.

Ok - how do I get the ability to carry more than two guns?

I believe you are only able to carry 2 weapons.

Arghhh! I want to carry a shotgun and sniper rifle in addition to my silenced pistol and rifle.

Nope. Not allowed. The good news is that you can get through the majority of the game with your trusty whistle and silenced pistol.

I think I used the preorder silenced pistol for the whole game, along with a silenced SMG, or later on the AR you get at the end of the occult DLC.

(Whistle) . . . (pop). (Whistle) . . . (pop). Repeat as needed.

I did that for a bit, then swapped em for a grenade launcher and machine gun. Went fucking rambo on those greaseball motherfuckers.

So far I’ve only gotten killed by getting lazy/overconfident. Which is fine, I’m not looking for a hard combat challenge, I’m really playing it for the story,

Big problem here, and may be me being an idiot, but…

When I call the van for ammo/guns, it shows the square button (PS4) for refilling ammo. When I press that button, nothing happens. I can press it when I’ve the the rifle I’m equipped with and nothing happens, or I can press it when it looks like it’s for refilling all ammo. But nothing is refilling my gun.

What am I missing? I know there’s a cheat where I can equip another free gun then reequip my gun, but I was trying to avoid that - plus it’s driving me crazy trying to figure out why the “refill ammo” square button isn’t doing anything!

OK, I’ve finished take over the sector for the Irish mob, now to go get my third underboss (the Italians.) Some thoughts at this point. PS4.

  • I picked this up after Dishonored and Dishonored 2 (I got part way through the last DLC, killing the outsider guy, and got burned out, I’ll go back at some time) which I started after Witcher 3. I play one game at a time due to limited play time. My expectations were low, in fact I started downloading Horizon Zero Dawn while playing this, assuming I’d not care for it.

  • My wife and I go to New Orleans every year and love it, so the area was appealing.

  • I’m LOVING this game. I never expected to get this enamored with it. Love the story, and the way it is presented. Love the characters. LOVE the music. The radio stations are outstanding and actually add to the game, especially the news clips.

  • I have bounced off GTAV a few times, so I’m not sure what it is about Mafia 3 that has so captured me.

  • I am terrible at driving in games like this, but for some reason I don’t totally suck at driving in this one. I found a Samson Opus in a garage, and holy crap, it goes from 0 to 100 in about 4 seconds, can hit 120 easily, and looks cool. Only thing I don’t like about it is it is an eh green, and I can’t mod it in the garage since it isn’t a supplied car.

  • The amusement park and mad house scenario was brilliant,

  • I was really pissed when I decided to upgrade from my precision 30 caliber rifle to the Viper. It looked like a higher damage rifle with only slightly lower ammo capacity. I saved up the $26,000, bought it, then saw that yeah, the capacity per clip is only 10 vs 15 rounds, OK I can reload, BUT instead of 15/60 like the precision, it’s only 10/10! 10 rounds is not even close to usable before having to find more ammo - why would they cripple it like that? And no way to go back to reverse that decision due to the save system (I went back to the main menu, then restarted but it still registered the purchase/lowered cash.) I also don’t see how any of the silenced gun upgrades are truly upgrades: the silenced Masterson seems to have the same specs as the Silentium, the silenced Deacon has less damage. The weapons are a disappointment since nothing seems better than my starting Silentium and Preacision 30.

  • Oh - and my Reload Ammo/buy Ammo buttons (square button/X button) don’t work with the ammo van. The X button works for picking a weapon. If there wasn’t a cheat I would not be able to get more ammo, which would be a show stopper.

This is one of those game that I think about when I’m not playing (and I want to get off here and go play!) I wonder why the huge GTAV just didn’t grab me like Mafia 3 - characters? Story?

I really like this game. It has pretty great presentation.

I honestly got chills a couple of times when a song matched up really well with the story.

I had an awesome time with the game getting to the 3 underbosses. Once I had them and moved on to the next set of territories I lost some momentum, but I strongly recommend staying with it and finishing. Not quite a spoiler but I’m going to blur it anyway – regarding your underbosses:

I’ve played it both ways and between keeping all 3 underbosses and focusing on one, I’d recommend keeping them. The scenes where you have no choice but to take them out are oddly touching, but it’s not as satisfying overall.

I love GTA5 and finished it, but I think I might enjoy Mafia 3 even more as well - after all I finished it twice. Reasons for it are:

  • more distinct/unique setting and atmosphere
  • combat/stealth is pleasure
  • car physics is the best
  • story, while simple, is really perfectly executed

also the character is more likeable and interesting than gta5s trio.

Yeah, I never felt like I could identify enough with the characters in GTAV, and switching between 3 of them didn’t help.

I thought I’d run into my feared “gotta drive your way out of this situation and my driving sucks so bad I’ll never get past this scene.” It’s not a spoiler to say I had to drive Vito’s piece of crap car and get away from cops. My first try I had them coming from all angles, could not get away, was running into stuff, and ended up running into a bayou or river and failing.

However, second time I started out and took a left and ended up on a wide road and then a 4 lane going over a bridge and it was as simple as just driving as fast as I could straight ahead. That worked.

When people talk about keeping all three vs knocking off two of them, I assume the decisions are clear in terms of how to keep them?

Lastly- I see in various guides that the very best cars that I can’t get now show up in the rich area - Frisco Fields - but I have driven around and walked around that area for a LONG time and never found one of the exotics I can’t get from my delivery guy at this point. In fact most of the cars I see there are pretty crappy.
