Not yet mentioned… Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a pretty nice little puzzle game.

Thanks, everyone. Definitely got me over the hurdle of deciding whether a Switch is a good Christmas gift. Ordered! I’ll dive into the games and figure out a couple to start her off with.

Captain Toad is a blast. Do not sleep on that!

2019, now with Japanese voices:

Has anyone ever used the IR camera thing on the right joycon? As far as I know the only game that’s used it is 1 2 switch.

The Labo stuff uses it extensively. Apart from that I think some Resident Evils did, not sure what else.

I bought my daughter a Labo kit for Xmas and it’s great! She loves assembling stuff and is super pleased with using the controls to play. I bought her the Vehicles kit (#3).

I saw this, and thought of @BrianRubin.
Has anyone played it?

It’s fantastic on PC, I can tell you that.

Best space combat game since X-Wing

I’ve only played a little, but I was really struggling with the controls. Sucks that we can’t tweak the mapping to our liking.

Er…TIE Fighter and Freepace 2 would like to have a word in this dark alley back here…

Never heard of them ;)

Perhaps you know of Freespace 2 by the name “Vomit Inducer 2000”?

Everspace is equally good on PC and switch

Has anyone here checked out Wandersong? It looks pretty neat, but I’m not exactly sure what kind of game it is. I would love to hear impressions.

Wandersong is cute. It’s basically a light adventure game. You walk around side scrolling style, but there’s minimal platforming. Most of the interactions are talking to people and very light puzzle solving.

It’s mostly about the writing. It’s gentle jokes in a DnD/ fantasy videogame setting.

There’s a button that has no purpose but to make your character (a bard) do a silly dance. That’s the kind of game it is.

The trailer does a good job capturing the tone. Just note that there’s almost no mechanics. There’s literally no death/fail states. It’s also less musical an experience than the content might suggest. The song-wheel singing mechanic (each direction is a different note) makes pretty dissonant noises.

Thanks for the write-up, CLWheeljack! That sounds kinda similar to A Night in the Woods, which I absolutely adored as a modern take on the adventure genre without all the tedious stuff. I only just heard about it on the Bombcast’s end of year wrap-up but it seems right up my alley. I’ll pick it up after I finish Monster Boy.

Ah, cool. I haven’t played A Night In the Woods, but I almost cited it as the closest thing I could think of from what I know of it. If you liked that, Wandersong will probably work pretty well for you.
