Of course one can’t compare eras, and those who favor Messi and Maradona will say that the game has advanced since then. But I don’t think it detracts from his greatness; while defenders have gotten better, attackers were less protected back in his days, and pitches were far worse.
6 goals in quarter final, semi final, and final of a World Cup before the age of 18 and then going on to win three Cups out of four is just insane. And that’s on top of ~ a goal per game throughout his career.
One can’t complain, to have lived in the era of Messi/C. Ronaldo, but Pele is the one player from the past I would have loved to see play in real life.
I think that’s a really good point about the protection players now get compared in back in Pele’s day. He was pretty much kicked out of the '66 world cup for instance by Portugal.
