Realms Beyond: Ashes of the Fallen (Kickstarter) D&D 3.5E Turn-Based RPG

I got all excitable and then I read the rest of the thread. What the hell is even going on?

As far as I can tell, nothing of note.

Okay good. Woo hoo turn-based D&D!

I mean honestly, even if the dude is just shitty about refugees that might be enough for me to drop. Kickstarter isn’t just a business transaction, it’s a fairly direct support of someone (though, granted, not as much so as say Patreon). But I would want to actually see the offending posts myself, in context.

I suppose I’ll hang on and see how things work out and if it ever goes to retail without any horrifying scandals.

Yes, I want to see the posts. But it sounds like they were deleted from RPGcodex, so that might not be happening.

Edit: Screenshot of many of the lead dev’s posts on RPGcodex is below. Context is missing, but given the content of those posts, is context really required here? It wasn’t for me; I withdrew my pledge.

Also one of their devs was literally a neo-nazi, he posted as a national socialist, etc. They supposedly fired him, but after that he was posting on RPGcodex telling people to back the game on Kickstarter because “it’s a really great game”. The whole thing reeks.

Edit 2: Note, the screenshot referencing the Greek golden dawn party was selectively taken, in the full post he talks about how they’re really nazis, so he isn’t supporting them.

Well, that’s certainly something. As someone who is next in line after the Greeks (it’s somewhere in the picture), I have about the same respect for him. I know, that’s the least of it, but no one can disagree with that point of view, at least.
It’s ridiculous how these fucktards always contradict themselves in the same way too.

As did I, something is rotten in Denmark.

yeah, pulled mine as well. Sad!

Newly registered here just to put in a good word for this project. I’ve been lurking on the Codex for many years since it’s an entertaining forum to read, and I’ve seen Hobgoblin42 comment in several threads long ago. The right wing posters on the Codex ganged up on him for not supporting Trump and his policies, and his posts never struck me as controversial. And all the proof for him being a “nazi” are some pasted-together screenshots. Seems very fishy to me.

Meanwhile, Silver Coin over on RPG Watch has tried to discredit this game since it was announced. He criticized the features, said it’s boring and uncreative and people should back more interesting projects instead, then tried to get the project into trouble because the writer liked posting nazi memes on the Codex. He was fired over the controversy (but he has always struck me as a decent guy in his Codex postings, despite the memes). Now, this Silver Coin fellow just happens to dig up more dirt on the owner of the company… conveniently arranged in a screenshot collage, with the original postings apparently no longer existing.

I’m very, very sceptical about this. I would rather believe that Hobgoblin, who has been a professional game developer for years and never struck me as a bad person, over an anonymous poster on RPG Watch who has been trying to badmouth this game since its inception.

Just my two cents. This game looks exactly like what I love to play, so I would be sad if it fails due to the efforts of a troll who has been very obviously acting as a troll for months now.

Are you suggesting the screenshots are fake? The dev said on RPGwatch that he posted stuff about immigration and he changed his mind and wasn’t quite as harsh now, or whatever. But he didn’t deny any of it.

If all this turns out to be some bizarre conspiracy I’ll buy the game when it comes out. They just won’t have my thirty bucks to hold on to for the next two years.

As for nazi memes from the guy they “fired”, I really don’t find them ironic, or ha-ha funny. That’s the alt-right core, and I don’t want to support it at any level. Exactly the opposite.

Yes, there seems to be at least some level of fakery there. I checked some of the old threads this collage was assembled from, and at the very least everything has been taken out of context. There is one screenshot where Hobgoblin posted an image of the Greek Golden Dawn party, implying he supports them. However, I found this post on the Codex:
NlBMzKE_d

Here he criticizes the Golden Dawn party by exposing that they are nazi sympathizers, while others in the thread claim they are a democratic party. Conveniently, that part of his post has been cut out, leaving only the image of the party, making him look like their supporter, which he is definitely not.

I haven’t checked all of the posts featured in the collage, but if one has been deliberately modified to fit the goal of Silver Coin (that is, hurting the game - which he has been deliberately trying to do for a long time now) then the others are likely too.

Personally I don’t care about drama or the political affiliations of developers. I just want to play RPGs and would support a far left developer and an alt-right developer equally, but I understand why some people don’t want to support someone they completely disagree with and whose opinion they find horrifying.

But I have followed this game for a long time now and wouldn’t want somebody’s fabricated smear campaign to hurt it. Support or not support whatever projects you want based on the developer’s politics, but please don’t base such a decision on blatant fabrications of a dedicated troll who has been trying to smear the game for weeks if not months.

Yeah, I think I’d want to see the posts in the actual context. That collage, besides being out of context, is also too small for me to actually interpret with my terrible eyesight. But also I am too lazy to do the legwork. So I’ll just keep an eye on things and cancel if I’m not satisfied by the end of the KS. Cause, yeah, if the game ships I can always buy it then.

You can zoom in on the collage, and many of them really don’t require context.

It’s very possible to be a nationalist alt-right islamophobe without being a literal nazi. Although it does seem like the fired dev was a true neo-nazi of some kind.

But everybody should make their own decision, of course.

No I can’t?

Edit: Well, can’t inline. Of course I should have opened in a new tab. :P

Yeah, I can’t see any context in which most of that shit would be ok.

Here’s more context:

If the collage makes you think he’s a guy you don’t want to support, fine. Just know that the collage is heavily doctored to harm his image with out of context posts, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some quotes aren’t even from him but have had the post of another user combined with his profile picture. Yes, I would expect Silver Coin to go this far by now.

I’d just take anything that originates from Silver Coin with a grain of salt. He’s known to have a personal vendetta against the game for some reason or another and isn’t above fabricating “evidence” about the developers being bad in some way. He’s very untrustworthy and has a clear agenda.

This is the last post I can make today, but I hope it was enough to give you a different perspective on this. I’m just a 28 year old woman who grew up with classic RPGs and this is what I’ve been waiting for for the last 10 years or longer. And it would be a shame if some troll managed to damage the project. In the end, it’s up to you whom to believe, but I don’t believe anything Silver Coin says without checking for myself. And from what I’ve seen, he likes to stretch the truth to further his goals, keeps bashing the game for various reasons, and tries to heap scandals on it in order to hurt its development.

Apart from being the guy who first instigated the drama about JarlFrank who used to write for the game and now instigating this drama about the company’s owner with a fabricated collage, he also made a concern post saying “I’ve just checked and the D&D 5E open source ruleset isn’t allowed to be used for digital products, I hope they won’t get into trouble”. The game isn’t even using 5E rules but 3.5, which have been used in PC RPGs before, so the post was just meant to make people doubtful about the game. Pretty much every post he made about the game since he started posting about it was meant to make people have a negative or doubtful opinion about it, without exception.

This is clearly a poster with an agenda to harm what looks like a promising game. Don’t take anything he says at face value.

Dejah out.

Yeah, JarlFrank is the actual neo-nazi I was referencing earlier.

All the posts about muslims coming in and raping people and the need to protect Christian european identity, etc, are more than enough for me.

Fair enough, I’m willing to purchase from or endorse a product from someone who is politically misguided, otherwise I’d be boycotting the whole world. Also, I was being harsh against whoever wrote the posts, I’ve been on the Internet long enough too know a picture is just a picture and the avatar could be fake. However, his alleged posts about refugees, at least, are still way too much to swallow, sorry.
I’m sure the truth will come to light soon.

I am not Silver Coin or Copper Coin or any other type of coin. I was just browsing RPG Watch. Sorry.

You really had no business using a common idiom. I hope you feel great shame.
