When I saw it, I thought it had good parts and bad parts in equal measure. After watching the movie, I listened to the Qt3 Movie podcast, which really emphasized the bad parts of the movie more. So I think, as a result, those stick out in my mind more than the good parts do. There was some discussion of the movie in another thread recently, where people pointed out the good parts again, and I remember going “oh yeah, I forgot I liked that scene too”. On balance though, even before listening to the Qt3 movie podcast, I felt the movie’s bad qualities overshadowed the good ones. And that’s not any kind of objective measurement, just a general feeling you get while you’re watching and when you think back on the experience.

I thought it was the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes back. I’m unsure as to whether that makes it a good movie. I wouldn’t present it as our crowning achievement to the aliens or anything.

I liked it quite a lot.

Good movie, or good Star Wars movie? There’s a difference.

I thought from a technical and spectacle perspective it was very well done, and I appreciated that they were willing to commit to the bleakness of the ending that the narrative presented demanded. I didn’t feel like we needed it to exist, though, or that it even really had characters, and I was disappointed by their decision to cast incredible actors like Mads Mikkelsen and Forest Whitaker and then barely use them. I did appreciate Ben Mendelsohn’s slightly larger role as the main bad guy.

The inevitable ending spoiled the movie pretty badly for me, alongside the tragic underuse of Mikkelson and some smaller moments here and there that didn’t quite work for me. I loved the Droid, though, and the Force Monk.

There is, in theory, a difference, but that’s moot because this was neither.

The final act was fun Star Wars action and space battles, but that’s not enough to make it a good Star Wars movie, much less a good “regular” movie.

It had a mess of characters with unbelievable relationships and shifting motivations dragging things down for 2/3 of the film, there’s no way for a sassy robot and a flashy finale to make up for that.

Bad movie, bad Star Wars movie.

Best SW after the original trilogy. So good SW movie and a good movie period.

I liked it even though I knew how it would end for the good guys. Sure it had its WTF moments, but what SW movie doesn’t.

I went to select and option and realized I no longer have an opinion.

I enjoyed it, more than VII and VIII. The fact that the Droid was genuinely funny made up for alot of the weaknesses of the first half, and the second half had some fun action.

Of the many issues it does have, the thing that stood out most to me was how lame the beach ending was. They didn’t even kiss right before dying?! Maybe I’m overreacting but it just struck me as another example of disney trying to remove all traces of sexuality from the universe.

If a deliberate, direct pastiche of the three Star Wars films counts as a movie, it was a pretty good movie.

Wait, is this a thread for force awakens?

I enjoyed it. It reminded me of one of those bleak world war 2 movie.

Great flick.

Now The Last Jedi, on the other hand…

Rogue One could have been good if they spent any time writing decent dialogue or creating interesting characters. The lead-in to Star Wars was so forced and unnecessary, despite getting a scene with Vader killing lots of dudes. It was shoehorned in to give us that scene and to make cartoon Leia.

I would take Last Jedi over Rogue One twice over.

Rogue One is a mediocre movie tilting towards bad. I was kind of with it during the setup, and I like the way it expands the Star Wars aesthetic, but the wheels start coming off the characters and story during the rain planet, and by the end it throws its hands up completely and descends into meaningless Star Wars porn. And the less said about turning Vader into Jason Voorhees the better.

And how the hell do you do a heist movie without a heist?

Star Wars porn is right. I like that.
