It means that the numbers were extrapolated using data in other sources, which is why there’s a huge variance.
The PS3 got caught using steroids.
NPD numbers for PS3 exclusives always seem catastrophic like this, and then the developers almost always come out a month or two later claiming at least 1-2 million sold. Seems like the majority of sales for PS3 exclusives come from outside of North America.
Or one number is copies sold at retail and the other is copies shipped to retail. Very different things, but a publisher only cares about shipping the copies out. After that, it’s the distributor’s problem.
PS3 home turf is Western Europe apart from UK (Xbox territory) and Germany (PC 4 life) for Western game releases.

So then, was the new Deus Ex a success? If Resistance 3 only sold 180,000, maybe Deus Ex didn’t do too much better?
Deus Ex HR was the no. 1 the past month.
Nice. Have Square announced any numbers for it yet? 1 million shipped, that sort of thing?
It’s been two weeks since Deus Ex: Human Revolution launched in Europe and just a few days longer since its launch in the US. Since then we have shipped over two million copies of the game globally. This is before we’ve even reached the Japanese October release date.

A longer look a the latest NPD figures is now up on Gamasutra. The thing that struck me most about this months figures: Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 and did so at a higher average price.
