Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

For something that exists, that you select before signing anything. :)

None of this land exists yet, you have no idea where your claim will be.

Just like it would feel to be a space pioneer!

Roberts has done it again!

Yeah, I don’t think the complaint is that they’re letting people bypass gameplay with money. It’s that they’re making money before implementing the gameplay. Or even having an idea what the gameplay will be.

I would not be surprised if they start selling very beautiful plots of land on the basis that it’s “purely cosmetic” and go back on their earlier promise.

Yeah, I think you are misunderstanding why we are considering it ridiculous, which is straight from the Q&A you posted

Edit: Best part of the FAQ right here:

Nice, I like the direction you’re going… so we could pool some money and go all in?

There will be plenty of room on the moons for all of the average players to grind out an existence that, let’s be honest here, will be way better than what passes for their real ‘lives’.

I think that it is funny that you are all focused on these worthless plots when real players like me have already locked in the choicest of real estate. This is why I bought the Stanton II Crusader Sataball franchise for only $150k in 2015 after a private negotiation with CIG. Now the Crusader corporation will have to build me the highest fidelity Stadium in the Galaxy with huge parking lots for all my fans or I will move the team to another planet. And I am going to make that money back on naming rights alone, let alone tickets and my 90% cut on concessions and parking!

The LA Dodgers sold for 2 billion dollars and they can’t even stream on twitch.

If you all upvote me enough I might consider hiring you into my Org as ticket takers or space beer vendors. Maybe someday you can work your way up to being a cargo loader for the t-shirt cannons.

Look at it this way. You’re getting in on the ground floor of a whole new universe. How do you think Yahweh got to be such a bigshot in this one?

Oh yeah. I can totally see the different type of jpg complaint. After all, the whale based funding system along with the slow progress are two of the things that make people really uneasy about the game.

But part of the initial furore elsewhere was that players thought you could pre buy your own plot of land and basically already have a stake claimed for yourself in the game before it even launches.

That’s not it. Supporters are spending money on a planned feature. But then again, that’s always been the model for supporting development of the game.

So yes, it’s another jpg I I misread the initial reactions here. I can totally understand that point of view.

Functionally how is it different though?

The beacon is effectively a legal stake on land to be granted to the first person who plants it. Presumably the whales get to fly around and find the best spots before launch. As soon as the game launches if you haven’t bought a beacon then the immediate prime spots would have effectively been sold to the whales.

Well, at least that’s how I think it works, given that they are selling beacons for a system which mechanics haven’t even been fleshed out.

It’s not just because it’s another jpg, It’s because it’s effectively a jpg of a jpg. Buy this jpg of a ship, but you won’t know what the ship even looks like or what functionality it will offer for X years (assuming all goes exactly as we’ve planned, exactly like all of our other plans).

Semantics isn’t going to cut it. How does selling a deed to land, different from selling a beacon to said land? Please explain, I am literally DYING to hear this one.

I will also spare you the agony of asking you to explain and/or rationalize how that is different from selling JPEGs of ships that DO NOT EXIST in the game. e.g. the 890 Jump will failed to sell two days ago, was unveiled as a JPEG back in 2014.

I’ll wait. Right here. So please make it good.

Yes, that’s precisely how it works. It completely throws out their argument about it not being P2W when in fact by the time you grind enough to even get the credits, you would have found that the whales already own land.

Oh, and this cash only. No store credits. New money only. So yeah, totally not a cash grab - even though they said so, as clear as daylight - right there in their FAQ.

With their worldwide burn rate of over $4m per month, this should help explain these desperate tactics.

This is a really good laugh.

Second Life sells land. You can buy land or you can choose to not buy land. I don’t see the big deal. If players want it and it helps sustain development of the game, more power to them. If it bothers you, go play something else.

Second Life sells land in a working game, with plainly defined mechanics/gameplay around that concept. Star Citizen is selling land that hasn’t been implemented in the game yet, has no set date to be available, no clearly defined rules/design, and no idea of in-game costs, mechanics, gameplay, etc. Second Life sells digital land. Star Citizen sells a blurry dream of digital land in a game that barely has any gameplay of any kind, much less in this specific area.
