Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

Yeah.

But the long way.

The real, long , way. :)

It just seems like this is heading to become just a new UFO religion.

The top 20 backers will be beamed up to the GCU stealthed at L2. That’s the only reasonable explanation.

Aw hell, now I’m thinking about backing it…

GUYS!! GUYS!!! He’s totally trying to bail - again!

You said “trying” :D

Good times. I was there. It seemed like yesterday

https://www.wcnews.com/articles/art23.shtml

I need more popcorn!

Not enough popcorn in the world for this stuff.

Remember back when it all began? Good times.

The game will likely need another two years of development, though users who back the project will have access to “a version of the game” next year. Star Citizen will be sold as a one-time purchase, though players will also be able to purchase in-game items.

Call me naive, but why didn’t he make the game modular? As in make a game better than Elite or Eve for the space ship part, get that right and working, then via an expansion, add terrestial planets/warfare, then via another expansion, create a first person shooter…

Because then the scam wouldn’t work?

There is no rational investor who will put money into a game that has already received $180 million+ from consumers. There’s just no upside there.

I’m of the (naive?) opinion that had he done it my way, he would have made MORE money overall.

If not from the game, then from creating a credible company and then listing it.

The outgoing CEO of Paradox, Fred something or other, owns about 33% of the shares in Paradox, whihc he listed.

The company is worth about $420,000,000 apparently.

CORRECTION- the IPO valued the company at $420 million, each share being a shade under $4, or 33 swedish kroner.

Each share is now apparently 190 swedish kroner.

That makes the market capitalisation 20.38 billion swedish kroner which Currency converter tells me is 2.238 billion dollars.

That’s some serious money. Rough calculations mean Fred is a multi millionaire several times over, worth more than the entirety of RSI.

Crobert could have created a reliable games company and then listed it and kept a quarter of the shares for himself. Bags of money for life AND an intact reputation.

EDIT:

fuck it guys, I have loads of ideas for good games. Let’s make a company!

Because he doesn’t know what he’s doing. If he did, he wouldn’t have let some random buddy or whoever trick him into using CryEngine.

But that would be hard work. And why work hard when you can buy space doors for your offices and hobnob with sci-fi and fantasy icons?

There are probably a hundred reasons why Star Citizen is going the way it is. I don’t know if Roberts is just in over his head or if he has actual malicious intent. This is a fun ride, though.

LOL!! ^this

I shit you not - and this is straight from a trusted source - they’re pitching a “10 year vision”, and a 2m backer base which have “deep pockets”. Except we know they don’t have 2m backers; and word is that due diligence has already revealed the funding chart to be pure fiction designed to show interest in the project, as well as the same thing (whales) they’re trying to sell.

Well if you were broke, then asking for $500K from crowd-funding, and hit a windfall, why would you risk it all on something that’s not going to keep yielding money? How was he going to create - and float - a company with NO product?

How about a jpeg of popcorn for $500.00?

Ah! But here’s the thing. Nobody tricked him into it. He was researching both UE4 and CE3. The guys at Crytek, some who left to go join him, were the ones who convinced him to chose it.

I have a thread that goes all the way to his 2011 beginnings; back when he was working for an obscure, and defunct, Canadian company called Blink Media.
