Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

This thread is full of stupid. There is no requirement to spend that kind of money. A lot of streamers are still on 1080 video cards. Everything is purchasable in game. The only thing you need is a starter pack with a starter ship to play right now. So you will pay somewhere between $40-65 for the game and a ship or 2 (there is a promotional offer right now where you get a free ship with lifetime insurance if you register with a referral code).

Or, then again, if you are smart, you don’t pay anything and keep waiting for Squadron 42 or SC to get out of its development mire. There is always free flight week to much around for a bit and laugh at the state of development.

But all the talk about jpegs and 10K pledges is just not required. How is it our business who spent what money on the game? Do you all consistently also write posts about how you feel about other micro transactions, people who spend money on Kickstarter, Twitch donations, higher Patreon levels?

As for jpegs, in what other space game are all the ships and vehicles you purchase fully rendered inside and outside (yes, they aren’t all flyable. But a lot are by now), allowing you to visit every nook and cranny and fly with crewmates if you’d like? That’s a lot of depth for a jpeg.

In the end, it’s clear how people feel about the project in general and the tone it sets in this thread. And there are good reasons for that.

But like Razgon (I won’t tag him for that) has mentioned in other threads, it’s not very motivating to post about a topic where the only thing everyone else wants to do is shitpost or spew negativity. I’m certainly losing interest in spending time sharing anything about the game here. I’ll let you all handle your version of SC news and humour.

I enjoy your take on the game and adventures within it. If I have time I’m still planning on trying one of the open weekend thingies. Just to see it for myself.

Is that Stockholm Syndrome talking? Many here appreciate your sharing the gameplay you’ve experienced but objectively speaking, Star Citizen continues to be a scam with predatory business practices. Criticizing and mocking those aspects do not invalidate your own experience. If you’re uncomfortable with the ridicule about those aspects, you should question how valid those deceptive practices are?

I think the fundamental difference with Star Citizen is that many people feel it isn’t just an over-due game, but an active, deliberate scam, a fraudulent enterprise with the sole goal now of fleecing people. Whether or not one agrees with that position, that’s what is coloring a lot of the negative comments I think.

God, what would you even put in a 10K PC? 3 3080s?

Well said. I do wonder why people feel the need to continually post in a thread about a game they have no intention of playing. I usually only click when I see that you’ve posted because I love hearing about your adventures - and that’s the only thing I enjoy in this thread.

One of these days I’ll reinstall it myself and see what’s new and maybe post my own stories.

Regarding the price, you’re absolutely right. I think I paid about $20 because I got the lowest tier ship when there was a sale on. Ironically I’ve probably spent more time playing Star Citizen than many other games I bought for the same price, because there’s so much to see even if there isn’t really a game yet.

Its existence harms fans of the genre and other actually legitimate games. Repeated posts are precisely because we are fans of the genre expecting the viability of these other alternative games to disappear when this inevitably implodes?

Are we sure yet Henry Cavill isn’t lending a helping hand?

Personally I enjoy both Wendy’s gorgeous screenshots/fun AARs and the silly gags. I really want this game to come out in a timely manner and be great, but I also find the clusterfuck of its production amusing. This thread is large, it contains multitudes.

I agree; I don’t see gameplay experiences as being in conflict with light-hearted criticism of the project.

I do see a conflict between sharing experiences and “anyone who likes this game is a dupe” type posts but that’s relatively rare.

If my Drake meme joke drives off Wendelius I’ll be very sorry.

If my experience with insanely-priced versions of normal goods is anything to go by, diamonds.

Maybe we need a ‘real’ SC thread and another where we make fun of stuff? Would be sorta cool if Discourse allowed some single thread with 2 branches.

My problem is, the game seems very predatory. There are a lot of people that are in a category to be vulnerable to that, and it bugs me. I don’t particularly care what other people do, unless it hurts others, that’s the argument that can be made against this game.

Not sure Tom would be a big fan of that idea. (And not that it matters, but I agree.)

This is a real SC thread in that it encompasses all that SC entails - from the promises to the awesome experiences to the harsh realities of its business model. Dividing the thread in two parts sounds like something Zeus (as told by Aristophanes) would appreciate.

The issue is that the overwhelming narrative outside of the official SC forums is that this game’s production is a clusterfuck, so any new SC thread, no matter how well intentioned, is going to end up with posts discussing the $10K ships and ballooning budget. I’m pretty sure Tom has no desire to police a “fans-only” thread. I sure don’t.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. I know that my posts are taken at face value, and not as advocacy for CIG or a SC purchase. And I’m glad you enjoy them. I do feel hesitant posting them when what precedes is a week’s worth of what’s been going on recently, for instance. It feels out of place.

That said, I agree that there is no reason to argue for a split thread, no matter how appealing it might seem at first glance. The alpha is what it is, warts and all.

Not at all. I enjoy memes (and agree with that particular one). Though I was confused for a while when parsing your comment. I think I am starting to know too much about the ships in SC. Because I thought I had missed a meme post about the Drake ship manufacturer. :)

I haven’t really played this past week because work is relentless and there isn’t that much to do in game on a daily basis. So I’ll give myself some time to reset how I feel about posting in this silly thread.

And I enjoy the gorgeous images from the game. Make no mistake, it has some great eye candy, which I like to see as much as the next space ship fan.

Too soon!

The point of buying a $10k PC is to spend $3k on PC components and $7k on RGB and gratuitous watercooling

That’s what we’re all saying.

There are plenty of purchased ships that don’t yet exist in game, I thought? Hence JPEGs.

I get that.

But a lot of the people shitposting SC in general are responding positively to your stuff.
