Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

It’s currently free to play until the 1st of December if you happen to have some time in the coming week.

If not, there will be more free events in Spring and Autumn next year. I’d personally recommend trying it during one of those. If it runs OK and your head doesn’t explode due to the placeholder UI when trying it, then consider a starter package. Otherwise, you can pass with no money wasted.

If you ever decide to try it, I’ll be happy to show you around or point you towards my org, which is always willing to take newcomers on tours and show them the ropes.

If I think about this a different way, as crazy as $400 Million seems, it’s small potatoes next to the revenue of any number of popular mobile games. Didn’t Puzzles and Dragons hit $6 Billion in a year at its height?

Star Citizen has probably done more real dev work than most of those mobile apps, and is delivering more to their ‘whales’ ($1000 spaceship) than some Gacha game has delivered in slot machine pulls to their whales.

So while I’m annoyed at Star Citizen, it’s also kind of whatever. At least some of that money is visible in the art assets.

Ooooh, thought the free thing ended last weekend. I should have some free time the rest of the week after tmrw. Maybe I will grab this and hit you up. Thanks.

Happy to. My in-game name is Wendelius_HA.

One piece of advice: If you create a free account, hit this link and enter the random referral code you get at account creation (can’t do it after). This gives you extra money in-game, which will cover a suit of armour and a weapon or backpack: https://gorefer.me/randomizer/STAR . Or you can use my referral code (but really no pressure. The randomizer is good too!): STAR-FQL7-VBQN

Also, see this post higher up in this thread with a well made new player guide:

And if you don’t have the time to try out the game this time, the offer stands another time. It’s not going anywhere fast. :)

I don’t think you should be shy about sharing your code. While we don’t all agree on some of the aspects of the project, it’s very clear that you enjoy the game and are discussing in good faith and not “shilling” or whatever.

Agreed. I’ve encountered plenty of shills for CR or SC over the years in comments sections etc., and Wendelius isn’t one of them.

Thanks you 2. I’ve edited my post to have both in one place.

Really I wish this game was less of a shit show from a dev standpoint just so Wendelius never had to feel even a little bad for being our resident fan.

Heh. This thread is probably a bit much at times, but the fact is I understand a lot of the feelings expressed here. I very much also wish the funding model and project management were a lot less questionable while still delivering some the crazy immersive stuff we are getting.

The alpha issues come and go and don’t affect everyone the same way. My sessions are mostly stable, others die every few times they step out of an elevator or get decapitated when entering their ship. So I’m pretty sure that if someone from this forum tried the game, I’d soon feel very sorry for the pain inflicted on them because of my positive posts.

Despite my enthusiasm to do so, illness at home and now the birthdays of my wife and daughter this week (more expensive than Star Citizen those :) ) have prevented me from spending much time in game. I do hope to post reports of bigger group events to give a feel for those soon though.

In the meantime, I’ve mostly lived the unglamorous life of the ore miner. Visit an asteroid belt, mine some rocks, drop them at the refinery then transport the refined ores to a trading centre to make some money. We all started 3.15 with no money. So time is spent rebuilding our bank accounts.

This takes place on the other side of the system, and I haven’t really had a chance to go ooh and aah at the latest ships at the expo. That said, I did visit on the first day. I went to see the Spartan (the new armoured people carrier). I don’t have a use for it. But I was duly impressed by the level of detail in the model. Look at those tire treads and the scratches in the metal (assuming those come through in the forum resized and compressed screenshots). SC ships and ground vehicles are pretty freaking detailed.

I’ve also used some of the free rentals to try out fun fighters and smaller ships I would normally not fly.

Lorville by night:

On the more fun side of “life in the verse”, 3.15 has introduced a new common sight in stations and cities:

Yep. People come out of hospital after a death with nothing but their gown on. So they go out and about wearing it. Classy. :)

There are fewer NPCs standing on tables these days. However, sometimes, you come out of an elevator at a station and get serious Day of the Triffids vibes. I expected them to point at me and start screeching any second…

I missed the fancy alien ships at the expo. More birthday fun tonight. But I’ll try and go see MISC day later this week. Those industrial ships (like the classic Freelancer) are where my heart lies.

I’m glad the SC sniping here doesn’t get you down. I’m remember feeling bad about liking comic books and D&D back in the day, when geek interests were not exactly supported. I would hate to think that I have become the enemy.

I do hope SC eventually coalesces into a game.

Oh yeah, I definitely got made fun of for liking D&D in the not too dim and distant past. Hard to imagine that happening now.

Hope everyone is feeling better!

I would love to hear about them. I am fascinated by this project but the only part I would want to play is Squadron 42 personally. A lot of my views are colored by the fact that they have pivoted away from delivering that when it was the big push of the kickstarter a decade ago.

I don’t think it is productive/fair/healthy/etc to tell other people what they should enjoy, so it feels weird saying that I support that you enjoy playing the game parts that do exist because my opinion shouldn’t matter on your fun. But with that caveat out of the way, I totally think it’s cool that you enjoy the game. People should play games they like. Totally on board with that.

My views are very much about all the things promised/sold that haven’t been delivered vs saying what has been delivered can’t be enjoyed. If a restaurant offers a 13 course tasting menu and after 3 hours all that comes out is the bread and someone walks by and smells some fresh bread and orders some bread and enjoys it then that person isn’t crazy for liking it. But the person waiting for the 13 courses to show up can still be upset.

You might be getting closer to playing it. Might.

Chris Roberts and family are moving to UK as the priority is shifting mainly to Squadron 42. I think the consolidation into one big office is also meant to make it easier to focus on and coordinate that work, among other tasks.

Doesn’t mean we’ll get it any time soon. There is cutlery animation to polish. But it’s the reason I originally supported the project. So I’m also frustrated it’s not there yet.

CR will never be mentioned as a positive role model in project management courses. That’s for sure.

But if SQ42 is awesome, I’ll be a happy bunny. A good CR single player game is an awesome experience.

Well they launched the quarterly briefing room series over a year ago so we have had 4 new quarters so there’s been 4 updates on how the game is coming along no new episodes to the series because they immediately “put it on hiatus” after announcing it until they are closer to finishing the game which is apparently not yet.

I’m guessing that, if we are going to get any new updates, they will start early next year. I remembered a Q&A video aired early July where CR mentioned moving to UK. It’s supposed to happen either end of this year it early next year. I haven’t kept up with the have they, haven’t they?

Assuming they then light a fire under that side of development, maybe we’ll start getting those updates again?

Here’s the summary from that video: Chris Roberts Returns - Star Citizen’s Next Steps | BoredGamer

They Are Moving to the UK

Either end of 2021 or start of 2022, they are planning to move over to the UK for sometime, to spend some time with the Squadron 42 team to get it finished!

They are going to moving to new offices in the UK as they are out of room at their current office, it’s still around Manchester and it should have 400 staff there and be their flagship office. Chris will be there on a day to day basis!

And cutlery polishing to animate

Totally. I have very little interest in Star Citizen proper. But I’d love a great SQ42, especially as it’s apparent Frontier are never going to make ED into what I was hoping it would become.

Just so. :)

NPC butler followers for posh Origin owners should be added to the roadmap.

Are you sure about this? I’ll wait.

^yup

I agree. Though the brainwashed who give a pass at everything, despite the glaring warning signs, could very well be a hive mind. ;)

I agree. It’s why I stopped making fun of him. lol :)

ICYMI

Can I say what a poor headline that is? Makes it sound like they raised 400 million JUST THIS YEAR. Ugh.
